BRISBANE, Australia - Telstra is set to make huge profits from the iPhone as
a signal provider even if it cannot sell the handsets.
Telstra Corp and Apple have failed to reach agreement over terms and
conditions for Apple's new iPhone, to be launched in Australia on July 11.
It is believed Telstra wants its Sensis products, like navigation tool
Whereis, to be preloaded on the third-generation mobile phone. Optus,
Australia's second largest mobile carrier behind Telstra, has confirmed it
will offer the iPhone next month. Telstra's other main competitor, Vodafone,
will also carry the device.
In other Telstra news, it has not renewed its sponsorship of Channel Ten's
Australian Idol this year, following a 19 percent slump in viewing numbers
last season. McDonalds, Mazda and Cadbury Schweppes have all renewed their
sponsorship of the reality show - one of Ten's key programs in the final
three months of the 2008 television ratings season, while Procter & Gamble
has followed Telstra's lead and ended its involvement. Ten Network sales
officer Vance Rothringer yesterday announced Sony Ericson as a new 'top
tier' sponsor of Idol.
