Default Telstra opens gates to high speed wireless

From
http://www.australianit.news.com.au/...-15306,00.html

TELSTRA is hailing its latest offering as the fastest wireless gateway in
the world.

"This device is now running at 7.2 mbps (million bits per second) and that
is the quickest around," said Telstra product management executive director
Ross Fielding.

The wireless gateway enables multiple users to access the internet at the
same time, and can also be used to operate other electronic devices such as
EFTPOS machines.

However, Dr Johnson Agbinya, senior lecturer in information and
communication at the University of Technology Sydney, said in theory it was
the fastest product available.

Telstra has made a concerted effort to untangle what it says are the
complexities of many wireless internet devices, using the past six months to
put together its latest product.

And while it is the first telco to the market with the high speed gateway,
Dr Agbinya said it did not mean the product would be unique to Telstra.

"All the networks are upgrading and everybody is testing to improve the
speed of downloading," he said.

The telco giant said its wireless gateway would benefit families as well as
businesses.

"You have families that temporarily set up location in a caravan, or a
holiday rental, and they can still have broadband access with two PCs, three
PCs," Mr Fielding said.

Telstra Business Group managing director Deena Shiff joked at the launch
that her butcher had a broken EFTPOS machine and was in dire need of the new
wireless system - at "mates rates," of course.

"It will probably cost him less than what he charges me for organic meat,"
she said.

The Telstra Turbo 7 Series Wireless Gateway will be available from tomorrow,
July 25.

.... and the family would only be living in a fucking caravan because of
Telstra's exorbitantly wireless data charges.

They'll soon to be be living on the streets if they actually DOWNLOAD
something of decent size.

Never read an article so full of bullshit.

With a name like that, probably would want to put Parky in the pot, and
boil him up for soup.

Likely. He's welcome to do that any time he likes, just as long as he does it outside.

Not much of a family holiday, Rod. Whatever happened to playing Monopoly
or Scrabble on rainy days? Or watching movies on iPhones?

The world moved on to PCs.

Only fools do anything like that. Anyone with a clue uses an N95 instead.

Wrong.
McDonalds and Starbucks offer faster speeds than what's being bragged about
by Telstra.

Probably not! In fact I was pretty depressed today when in a major
shopping centre in the tourist ghetto of Cairns just as the high
school kids infiltrated the place. They all flocked around the Mac's
stand in one of those "food hall" places. Not one took any of the
many other food options for an after school snack. :-(

Cheers, Phred.

Well bugger me! What a red letter day -- you and Alan Parkington in
agreement! :-)

But I have to admit this goes entirely over my head. Why is it taken
as an indication of nearing use-by date, to be surprised over the
popularity of McDonald's among teenagers to the exclusion of all
the many other culinary styles on offer? Seems the little buggers are
even more conservative than we BOFs!
