INTERNET users in Geelong and the Surf Coast can now tap into high-speed
broadband in a major breakthrough for the region.
Telstra yesterday activated its ADSL2+ broadband at 19 local telephone
exchanges, providing customers with the fastest available speeds of 20
megabits per second.
Telstra Business Group managing director Deena Shiff said regional users
could now get fixed speeds which were previously only available in capital
cities.
"As well as being able to do everyday online activities a whole lot faster,
it also opens up the door to a whole new range of communications
opportunities such as video conferencing," she said.
Optimal ADSL2+ speeds are up to 350 times faster than a standard 56kbps
dial-up connection, and up to 70 times faster than a standard 256kbps ADSL
connection. Speeds will depend on the users' distance from the exchange.
Across Australia, the telco giant will switch on the service at more than
900 telephone exchanges.
The new exchanges will serve more than 2.4 million users across the country,
including more than 600,000 homes and businesses in Victoria.
