Australia's largest telco, Telstra has managed to win the 'Best Asia Telecom
Carrier' and 'Best Asian Mobile Carrier' awards at the 2008 Telecoms Asia
Awards held in Thailand overnight.
The awards, now in their 11th year are Asia's largest telecom industry
awards and recognise outstanding performance by the service providers and
industry executives, with the winners chosen from candidates nominated by
Telecom Asia readers and editors, in partnership with Ovum, one of the
world's leading ICT research and consultancy firms.
The final selection is made by an independent panel of industry experts
based on financial performance, technology, market leadership and corporate
governance.
Last year's winner was SK Telecom, which took out the overall prize for Best
Asian Telecom Carrier as well as Best Mobile Carrier.
In accepting the awards in Phuket, Telstra Executive Director Wireless Mike
Wright said the awards "are testament to the efforts of our people who are
the reason we continue to deliver on our world-leading five-year
transformation program.
"We now rank at or near the top of our global peer group on many key
financial performance measures and are the clear market leader in mobiles
and broadband in Australia", he said.
And according to Joseph Waring, Telecom Asia Group Editor, "... Telstra's
successes are clearly recognition for its rapid rollout and launch of Next
G, and the impact the mobile broadband service has had on the market."
