Default Telstra's $80 "all you can eat" iPhone plan - but only for businesses...

Just read a flyer from Telstra. It has a business plan for iPhone 3GS. Zero bux
up front, $80 a month and it includes a fair swag of data, too. But it's only
for business customers.

I was a tad disappointed that something similar for non-business customers isn't
available. None of the iPhone plans, all of which require a fair few bux up
front have any real data allowance. Some have 10 bux worth, which when you're
using a smartphone for what it is intended is bugger all.

Why is data over mobile phone networks so expensive? Does it cost more to
maintain a wireless network than it does for a landline based one?

That aint cheap if the contract time is the usual 2 years.

It's not with non-Telstra carriers. eg, Exetel re-sell Optus for
$0/month and 1c/MB.

Sure does. And the bandwidth's a shared resource, not dedicated to you.
A bit like free-to-air vs cable TV.
