Default Are there 3G phones that will work on NextG or vice versa?

My daughter and her husband are with 3. They have LG 3G phones, which, frankly a
pieces of crap. Their contracts are up and now they're looking at replacement
phones.

I was wondering if there are phones that if in the 3 area and are on 3G will
roam to NextG when they're beyond 3 coverage?

They live SE of Melbourne and towards the outer fringe of 3's 3G coverage. My
daughter works a bit further east so her mobile roams to Telstra's GSM as she
goes to work. The son in law's phone drops calls all the time as it loses 3G
coverage, say, on the Met. It is supposed to be a "bumpless" transfer from 3G to
GSM when this happens, but neither of their phones will work this way.

There are other issues with the phone such as crappy software, phones constantly
needing reseting, etc..

So, would something like the new Motorola Razr V9, a NextG phone, with their 3G
SIM card in it work on both 3G and NextG?

Nope. Handsets may be capable, but 3 only have a roaming agbreement with
Telstra 2G (GSM), not NEXT-G (850MHz 3G)

As "thegoons" has already mentioned, there are phones that can, but it's
still not possible. This is due to Telstra making the decision that
they will neither wholesale NextG, nor allow 3 customers to roam onto
the NextG network.

Actually, it is due to the failure of 3 to build a decent network.

The decision by 3 not to build a bigger network was indeed their
decision, and they wear whatever consequences there may be. Of course
even Telstra must have thought it was a reasonably worthwhile 3G network
to have bought half of it when they did.

On the other hand, the fact that Telstra chose not to wholesale NextG,
nor to allow domestic roaming onto NextG was noone's decision but
theirs. It has nothing to do with whether or not 3 build a decent network.

Yeah, pity. Thing is if Telstra did allow this, then I'd get a 3 account. I'd
then have the best of both worlds - the rural coverage of NextG and the cheap
capped plan that 3 has to offer.

As an aside I see now that Optus, in an advert in today's Herald-Sun, has a
$19/50 cap plan. That would suit me perfectly. Unfortunately, Optus coverage in
the stix ain't that flash, and in any case, because of a billing ****up years
ago that hurt my wife's credit rating, not to mention her state of mind, I
wouldn't piss on Optus if it were on fire.

ROTFLMAO. Maybe you should come up to country NSW to see how great the
rural coverage ISN`T ;o)

Again, in your over zealous attempt to stick up for Telstra, you've missed the
point that I was making - that I'd sign up with 3 Mobile for its $29 cap plan if
it would roam to NextG when not in its own 3G coverage. That'd suit me down to
the ground as far as being on a halfway decent plan goes and getting better
coverage in rural areas.

Do do it deliberately? Being obtuse, that is?

No, I think you missed the point.

You DONT get to stamp your foot and demand NextG service from someone other
than Telstra.

You want NextG, you go to the source.

End user customers dont get to demand wholesale arrangements

Not to mention their ****** support and the crappy handsets they supply.

Im surprised Telstra have any deal with three.

Telstra = Overpriced but reliable
3 = Dirt cheap piece of ****

Such as?

My daughter and her husband renewed their $29 cap plans with 3 Mobile
recently. Their new phones, a Motorola V3x and a Nokia somethingorother
work fine. Reception is heaps better too than the LG phones that they had
originally.

Only thing is when they come out to visit us they have GSM only coverage.
But that's by-the-by as they don't have a need to use the 3G services out
here.

Yeah, I'm with 3... have no problem with them at all. Admittedly, I never
need rural coverage (and rarely even need to roam off the 3 network onto
Telstra GSM).

(And many of 3's handsets are also sold by the other carriers.)

Their Indian call centre can be frustrating at times, however.

My son in law used to have issues with 3G dropping out or when on a call
it dropping out as the train he commutes on enters a 3G blackspot.
Supposedly it's to go auto over to GSM but this often didn't happen. With
the new phone, a Nokia Classic (don't know the model number) it seems to
hold a connection better.

>Their Indian call centre can be frustrating at times, however.

As can be any of them. I don't know if they've had to call the call centre
or not.
