Default Typical NextG Data Speeds?

Just connected my Motorola V9 to the laptop and using the Moto Phone Tools
established what it says is a "Telstra GPRS Data Connection".

Below are the results of a a speed test:

http://www.ozspeedtest.com/

Broadband Speed Test Results

Test run on 11/09/2009 @ 12:24 AM

Mirror: OptusNet
Data: 600 KB
Test Time: 7.83 secs

Your line speed is 624 kbps (0.62 Mbps).
Your download speed is 78 KB/s (0.08 MB/s).
Graph

623.507660878kbps

How do these figures look?

Hmmm... GPRS is 2G. Old software needing an update?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General..._Radio_Service

"General packet radio service (GPRS) is a packet oriented mobile data
service available to users of the 2G cellular communication systems
global system for mobile communications (GSM), as well as in the 3G
systems. In 2G systems, GPRS provides data rates of 56-114 kbit/s."

Excellent for GPRS

Not that great for 3.6Mbps HSDPA at this time of day, but not too bad
either. Perhaps try a larger file (unless you're worried about
charges). HSPA takes a while to 'ramp up'.

I'm getting poor speeds now too. 0.44Mbps down, 0.07Mbps up. Using
HSDPA ExpressCard modem in Adelaide CBD.

However, we were both downloading a 600KB file from Optusnet.

A couple of hours ago, I was downloading a large file (~100M from the
U.S. and was hovering around the 150KB/sec mark.

Who knows? Maybe. I'm running the current version of Motorola Phone Tools. If
it's the phone firmware it's also up to date, or so it tells me.

If it's firmware the update process tells me that it's current.

I'm using it to connect and send/receive email and Usenet stuff. I did the speed
test out of curiosity. I have a $5 data pack on my plan, which I probably will
have used up by the end of tonight. The logs tell me that I've sent and received
around 3 megs tonight.

No big deal. Just curious as to how fast it is compared to what it could be or
what others get from their mobile data services.

When I have a data connection on the phone itself, say to check email, or the
weather radar the HSDPA symbol flashes as the data is being sent and received.
So, at least the phone itself is connecting that way.

Why the phone connection says that it's GPRS, I dunno.

No big deal. Just curious as to how fast it is compared to what it could be or
what others get from their mobile data services.

6:20 am results for 3G (Sierra Wireless Compass 888 modem on the
Three network):

Broadband Speed Test Results

Test run on 11/09/2009 @ 06:21 AM

Mirror: AussieHQ
Data: 600 KB
Test Time: 2.64 secs

Your line speed is 1.85 Mbps (1849 kbps).
Your download speed is 231 KB/s (0.23 MB/s).

NetBook -> Bluetooth -> Nokia 6121 Classic -> Optus HSDPA

(ie, far from an ideal setup...)

588kb/s down and 73kb/s up.

You're with NextG, I assume? I am.

The GPRS message appears to be a Windows networking thing which pops up when the
connection is established. It also tells me that it's a 12 mbit connection,
although I think that is more to do with the connection between the laptop and
the phone which I think is USB 1.1.

I had a look at the settings. Can't find anything specific that enables or
disables HSDPA service or what would be telling Windows that it's a GPRS
connection.

Dozen madder.

Significantly better, I'd say...

No I won't. You will use Google.
