Default Vodafone call price hike

If you're getting a new Vodafone cap plan, then beware, calls are 90c a
minute vs. 80c per minute on the old plans.

So your included credit will get you around 10% less in call minutes than
you would have if you signed up on the old plans.

On the other hand, you get unlimited voda to voda calls for free. But since
most phones are not with voda, on average you'll be worse off.

Get a PennyTel account and use the callback service. Then it's 10c /
minute to you and 10c / minute to the recipient.

That seems to be more expensive than what I pay on my Telstra $40 plan.

Which prompts me to ask - why is everyone so willing to pay nearly a dollar a
minute to make what can be considered as local calls on their mobiles?

Of course, many of them may be to people interstate. In which case, timed calls
wouldn't be out of place compared to landline STD calls. Even so, they're
nowhere as expensive.

Even back in the bad old days of Telecom when my STD bills used to be high when
maintaining a BBS, the per min. charges were never as high as what we pay these
days for mobile calls.

Rates vary to the above, but even so, it's damned cheap compared to Telstra or
Optus.

It says that it uses the Optus 3G network. Presumably it's some sort of VOIP
arrangement. I'm not sure how it achieves this for phones that don't have VOIP
software installed or those which can't run such software.

Still, an interesting concept.

Because, with a capped plan, that isnt necessarily the most important consideration.

Because the infrastructure has been around for a tad longer.

It moves the voip functionality to their systems.

Yep.

Indeed, the pricing is quite artificially high. If I use my *Dutch*
Vodafone SIM in Oz to make a call in Oz, I pay *less*, about AUD 0.50 a
minute (and that's *pre-paid*, if I had a contract, it would even be
cheaper). And if you use a callback scheme, you pay even less. But the
*network* used is still the same.

So you don't pay what it costs, but what they charge.
