I went from Melbourne to Echuca over the weekend. But although
there is supposed to be 2G coverage in Rochester and the Echuca/Moama area,
and national roaming coverage in Heathcote, according to the Vodafone
website, I experienced no coverage at all from just after Forbes until just
before I arrived in the centre of Echuca. Furthermore, when I got to Moama,
coverage was patchy in many places and non existant in places like the Rich
River Golf Club at ground level outdoors (available but intermittent on the
first floor). As I left Echuca to head back to Melbourne, my coverage ran
out before the houses did. Yet according to the coverage check featuree on
the Vodafone website, there is a big ring of coverage that envolopes Echuca
and Moama and the surrounding area.
I have a 3G handheld phone but it does not have 900Mhz 3G coverage, hence I
was relying on 2G coverage outside of Melbourne. I have international
roaming activated, so according to the Vodafone website, I should have
natiohnal roaming activated too. In most places my phone was located in a
vehicle when I reported no coverage, but in Heathcote, central Echuca and
the Rich River Golf Club, I used it outdoors as well.
Is this the experience of other people, or could my phone have problems with
2G? My main gripe is that the coverage I experienced does not match the
coverage as displayed on the Vodafone website.

Doesn't sound surprising at all, I have Prepaid mobile broadband with
them and it doesn't work where their website says it should.

For coverage outside the cities and larger towns, there's just one
option, Telstra NextG, period. Everything else is a (bad) joke.
As a traveller (from The Netherlands), I put up for several years with
Vodafone GSM and Telstra GSM, but finally bit the bullet and went
Telstra NextG and am a happy chappy ever since.

Had the same experience Optarse - crap coverage even in the 'burbs -
changed to Tel$tra and now everything works, but at a price, of
course.

I'm with Optus and have had instances where the coverage is better then
Helstras is/was.

Yeah, me too, tho admittedly there arent very many now with NextG.
Its certainly just as good as Telstra in plenty of places tho.
Between Melbourne and Echuca where I couldn't get any Vodafone coverage, I
found that Telstra (2G/3G) and Optus (2G) were generally available in most
places. There were some places where only Telstra was available. However,
across the border in NSW, there were some places where only Optus was
available.
If I had a 900 Mhz 3G handset, perhaps the Optus coverage would have been
even better for me. But then I may have had better Vodafone coverage, who
knows.
Years ago I went from melbourne to Echuca and had prety good coverage with
Telstra, and that was with a GSM only phone.
