Default VOIP over Mobile Networks

http://www.theage.com.au/digital-lif...z.html?page=-1

Pity that the article doesn't go into the pricing of the listed services. ie.
while a call costs say ten cents with Mynetfone, how much data will the call use
and is it cost effective compared to making a normal voice call on the mobile?

Probably because that's so mindbogglingly complicated to work out, it's
impossible to cover coherently in a newspaper article.

It depends on what you pay for data, how long the call is, and how much
you'd pay for that call if you made it via your mobile plan. All those
things are wildly variable. You could calculate it but, realistically,
the best way to find out is to try it and see.

Yeah, perhaps.

I use http://www.pennytel.com/au/index.jsp to make VOIP calls.
First you need to join, for free, as a normal VOIP customer. Choose the Free
Access (untimed) plan.
Enter your on-line Pennytel address book to include all your likely phone
call numbers.

Now join their mobile plan on the Optus network at $8 per month.
From there use their SMARTDIAL system to make calls over your mobile at 8c
untimed to any landline or 10.5c/min to any mobile.
The Smartdial is a little complicted to set up but it sure works.

How much data do you use a month? And what does it cost you for that data?

I'm trying to understand if this is cheaper than making normal voice calls,
particularly if you're on a capped plan.

There is no data charge for the mobile phone calls.
They are simple treated the same as calls over the Optus network from a
normal mobile phone.

A standard VOIP call uses about 50MB per hour (though it will vary
depending on the codec used).
