improving WIFI cell phone range

Hey everyone this is my first post ! I have been researching and looking into products the past month or so and have been trying to figure out a way to increase my wifi range on my cell phone. Ill tell you a little bit about my situation; I have a samsung Galaxy note phone and have it signed up with a voip service provider so i can make REAL CHEAP phone calls. The only downside to this is I do not have a data network on my phone so its strictly being used under WI FI. Which is okay with me, I can use my High speed internet at home and when im out and about I can pick up Public WiFi signals. But the annoying thing is that the range isnt always the best and it sucks having to try and find the best spot to improve the quality on the signal.

So has any one had any luck at improving there signal strength somehow? Is there a device that can be hooked up to your cell phone that is mobile enough to bring it with you publicy, or maybe hook up inside your car ? I have considered a WIFI repeater for my home to improve my signal , and then even considered a wifi repeater for my car to pick up public signals and amplify them.. if thats possible. But the latest gadget I came across was a big Parabolic satellite dish that you can mount up high on your house and apparently connect it to your router, and therefore send your wifi signal out in the public so you can use it for miles around your house.
