>> Their T&C's say that they do, but whether they actually do seems to be a bit hit or miss. They did cut off one of mine once, but
>> I managed to get it reinstated by ringing Customer Services.
>>
>> I have two seldom used Orange PAYG SIMS so, as a precaution, I send a text message from one to the other every couple of months
>> on an alternate basis. That seems to work - for a cost of only 5p per month.
>> --
>
> Does that work out cheaper than a 5 second phone call?

They generally bill in multiples of one min.

This is a weekly short posting giving brief details of where to find
more information about the subject of uk.telecom.mobile: mobile
telecommunications in the UK.

There is also a companion group called uk.telecom for discussion
of non-mobile topics. Before you post, please consider which group to
use and then post to that one group.

The FAQ for the group is available on the web at
<URL:http://www.freedom-mobiles.co.uk/utmfaq.htm>

If you are new to this newsgroup please at least scan
through the FAQ before asking a question.

The group's charter is as follows:

"This group is for the discussion of topics relevant to:-

1. The UK mobile telephone networks.
2. Satellite telephone services usable within the UK.
3. Services, hardware, software and applications available for/from
the above networks.

Advertising is forbidden.

Encoded binaries (e.g. pictures, compressed files, etc.) are forbidden. Such
material belongs on a web or FTP site to which a pointer may be posted.
Cryptographic signatures (e.g. PGP) may be used where authentication is
important and should be as short as possible.

Posts must be readable as plain text. HTML, RTF and similarly formatted
messages are prohibited. To see how to make some common newsreaders comply with
this, read <http://www.usenet.org.uk/ukpost.html>.

Pointers to commercial or other web sites in signatures are permitted provided
the message is on-topic. All signatures should be 4 lines or fewer and
preceded by the customary usenet separator "-- " (dash, dash, space) on a line
of its own."

Note that there is now a group uk.adverts.telecom.mobile so if
you want to advertise something related to mobile phones please
do it there and not here. The uk.adverts.telecom.mobile charter
gives recommendations for things like subject lines. Check at
<URL:http://www.usenet.org.uk/uk.adverts.telecom.mobile.html>

Anyone interested in any uk.* newsgroup should really subscribe to
uk.net.news.announce. This is a low volume moderated group for things like
proposed new groups, charter changes, and UK Usenet Committee elections.
For full details about the uk.* hierachy see <URL:http://www.usenet.org.uk>.

Welcome to uk.telecom.mobile. If you talk sense about mobile
telecommunications in the UK you will not go far wrong.
I wouldn't let kids anywhere near O2 PUFFL, far too easy for them
to run up unincluded charges.

Which PAYG have you got them on, and who do they call most?
>
> Their prices are stupidly low and they won't be making any sensible
> profit, they seem to be throwing money at ideas that serve only to
> attract new customers rather than generate income.
>
> I'll give them three months tops before they go belly up. I think you're
> correct though that you'll be able to port away if that happens though.
>
>
I don't think their prices are stupidly low, connection charges between
networks has been continuously dropping and most of the network
infrastructure has now been paid for.

One can argue that Mobile networks are now charging too much.

By only offering online managed PAYG (no complicated contracts services)
Giffgaff are saving a fortune by getting their forum to answer most
customer service questions.
Allowing them to have the smallest Customer Service depts of any network
> > tariff. What I would do is call the Customer Services of the company of
> > your choice (I would omit Vodafone) and lay your cards on the table,
>
> Thank you very much for your answer, you're right, I'll call them.

Can anyone suggest ways to get to speak to people who actually have
authority in agreeing deals? Usually the Retentions people do, but you can
only call Retentions if you're an existing customer. Often the first-line
people don't have any power, and sometimes they're under pressure not to
pass you through to someone more senior.

It's possible salesmen in shops might, but don't believe anything they say
unless you have it in writing. There are far too many cases of them lying
to achieve a sale.
>> Got one of these phones recently, it came with firmware 5.71. Firmware
>> 6.90 is now available, however I can't download it, either from the phone
>> or using Nokia software updater. O2 said to contact Nokia, Nokia say to
>> contact service provider!
>>
>> Is there anywhere I can get the new software? Why would updating appear
>> to be disabled on this phone? My partner has an unlocked one and it does
>> allow updating.
>>
>>
>
> This is why I get SIM only from O2 and the phone direct from Nokia before
> anyone can slug it.
>
> At least you can buy unslugged Nokia phones, not like those crapple ones.

Well my partner's is unlocked but can't use Youtube or any other video
streaming with O2, but it can update the software!

> Will I have to pay everything even if I leave back to France

Yes, because you haven't even paid for the cost of the phone after 10
months.

BTW, if it is so easy to get out of a contract in France - why not
take out another contract in France just before you leave to get a new
shiny phone there. Then you don't need to get another phone when
moving to the UK.
> £25 for unlimited calls and texts seems quite good to meeeeeee !
>
Giffgaff are revising their goody bag add ons, that'll put pressure
on them to offer better than unlimited for £35 (half price ends today)

Free internet until December, free giffgaff to giffgaff for 3 months,
member rewards and totally free 0800 swings Giffgaff over Asda for me.

Three 3pay are now offering voice add ons (voice 500 for £25)
with 5000 3 to 3 min, 300 text and free Skype make well worth
considering for heavy PAYG use.
>
> So when my phone changes from Orange to T Mobile (unlikely I know),
> will it then say T mobile on the display?
>
>
It probably depends how they implement the merger.

My phone says Virgin when on the T-Mobile network which must come from the
Sim card somehow, but what appears to be the correct network name if I am on
a Foreign network.
