>>> Have there been too many returns from disappointed Verizon customers?
>>
>> Droid Does: A Price Drop
>> from Mashable! by Adam Ostrow
>>
>>
>> When it was released earlier this month, the retail price for the
>> Motorola Droid was $200 for new activations on Verizon. Although
>> Verizon is staying firm with that price point for now, it appears that
>> some of its retailers are not.
>>
>> Specifically, Amazon and Dell have both cut prices on the smartphone
>> to $150 and $120, respectively. The news comes just one day after news
>> broke of price cuts by online retailers on other devices not named
>> iPhone: the Palm Pre and Pixi.
>>
>> Of course, the device cost shouldn’t really play a huge role in
>> consumer’s decision given the total costs of ownership for all of them
>> are well into the thousands of dollars over the life of the wireless
>> contract. Nonetheless, if retailers are slashing prices, meaning
>> they’re making less on each sale, it could be a sign that these iPhone
>> alternatives aren’t selling as well as anticipated.
>>
>> So far, it’s been estimated that the Droid sold about 100,000 handsets
>> in its first weekend and 250,000 in its first week on the market.
>>
>
> Do you actually have any clue how cellphone marketing works these days??
>
> Hey moron fanboi... If you actually look at this factually - you would
> find that this actually is a mark AGAINST Apple.
> The mentioned retailers are completely FREE to set the pricing on the
> device they sell, as THEY see fit
> In contrast, when it comes to the iPhone, there is absolutely ZERO
> freedom price wise.
> No free market forces at work - just the iron grip of Apple tightly
> around the consumer's throat - squeezing every cent.....
>
> Gee, I wonder which one is better for the consumer??

Well, if consumers feel that they MUST have an iPhone and nothing else
will do. . . .

I think that I will hang on to my unfashionable Motorola RAZR V3m. Some
of us would prefer a phone to a fashion statement!

> Perhaps, but it'd be tempered by the sheer joy that a minor bug could be
> fixed without having to waste an hour or two backing up the device,
> reflashing the entire OS image and restoring all user data like iPhone
> owners seem to have to go therough every couple of months.

And don't forget discovering that apple has crippled your external
interfaces and cables. Perfectly working inexpensive video output cables
suddenly stopped working when Apple decided to require an 'authorization'
chip be present on the otherwise dumb cable. All to gouge the cable makers
and customers for profit.

I'm looking foward to the day when Apple gets bitch-slapped for
anti-competitive trade practices like this. Apparently they've forgotten
the Carterphone vs Ma Bell case. It's really despicable what selfish
bastards they've become at Apple.
>> More new customers came to AT&T for the iPhone than the total number
>
> For what it is worth the number of subscribers the article claims
> Verizon added last quarter appears no where in Verizon's 10-Q, and
> the number which does appear in Verizon's 10-Q, 1.32 million, while
> not a whole lot better, actually exceeds the number of AT&T iPhone
> customers the article claims were added (1.28 million). The above
> claim makes a nice quip, but doesn't seem to be true.
>
> It seems to be the case, however, that AT&T only offers the iPhone
> to retail postpaid customers and AT&T only added 1.39 million of
> those last quarter. If 1.28 million of those really bought iPhones
> then the rest of AT&T's handset line did a whole lot worse than
> Verizon.
I wonder what the iPhone churn figures look like. They're sure rippin
> > Android Love can be so PAINFUL!
>
> > Android’s Rapid Growth Has Some Developers Worried
> > from Gadget Lab by Priya Ganapati
>
> > A year after its release, Google’s open source Android operating
> > system has become a sensation. After a slow start, it is now available
> > on at least 12 phones, with more devices waiting in the wings.
>
> > Good news for Android fans, right? Not really, say some developers. A
> > slew of problems have made managing Android apps a “nightmare,” they
> > say, including three versions of the OS (Android 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0),
> > custom firmware on many phones, and hardware differences between
> > different models...
>
> How is this any different from other platforms? *Wintel PCs certainly
> don't have 100% standardized hardware; Blackberries, WinMo and Symbian
> devices have form factors and hardware and firmware differences all over
> the map, and even the iPhone platform has become fragmented; you have
> devices without microphones (1st-gen iPod Touch), some with and some
> without a GPS, only one with a compass, etc. *And, unless Apple wants to
> be leap-frogged eternally, even its "standard" 480x360 display size will
> eventually have to give way to higher res displays, potentially breaking
> compatibilitywith the entire app store catalog someday (although
> presumably Apple will empoy some type of pixel-doubling "compatibilit
> mode" when the day comes.)
>
> A platform is just that- a platform, not a device. *As Android continues
> to shake out, device manufacturers will have to ensure compatibility with
> the growing base of applications, not the other way around, like Tandy
> discovered with their "quasi"-PC compatible computers of the early 1980s-
> at first they were able to court developers to rewrite or patch their
> software to run on the Tandy platform but Tandy was eventually forced to
> "get in line" like everyone else and make their products conform to the
> market's wishes. *Android will be the same- if a significant number of
> Andriod apps won't run a model such-and-such, that manufacturer will
> learn a painful lesson and shape up.
>
> Of course, devs will also have to learn to play by the rules and avoid
> coding for undocumented functions and features- something one can get
> away with on a platform with just a few devices, but not one with dozens
> or hundreds.

Then a logical conclusion is that the Android isn't a desirable
platform to develop for at this time but might be someday?
> ghost_topper@hotmail.com:
>
>> You should not really be so bitter because you sold you AAPL in 2005.
>>
>>
>
> Your concept of how stock is traded by daytraders is way off. We'd
> NEVER hold a stock LONG! That's just suicide. Only the suckers "hold"
> stock and are loyal to the corporations. They're the ones jumping out
> of windows....
>
> I have missed the opportunity to do a little AAPL trading since its $85
> bottom the week of March 2. I don't trade expensive stocks very often,
> anyway. Money multiplies when a $2.12 stock mysteriously rises to $6.83
> on a rumor some big bank is going to buy this bankrupt little bank.
> Notice how the multiplier here is 3.22. If AAPL were $100/share, for
> similar short-term performance, it's price would have to go to $322 to
> match the profit margin of the failed bank. That's just not going to
> happen to an expensive stock very often. If you nervously punched the
> button for $5000 worth of Harper Valley PTA at 2.12 and it jumped to
> just $6.83 by Monday when you guessed WRONGLY it wouldn't go any higher,
> your $5000 only became $16,100 (when it could have been over $20K).
> This kind of thing happens in DAYS to really cheap stock, not months or
> years like AAPL. You could starve by then!
>
> Well Fargo did me a big favor this past year bailing out the failed
> Wachovia Bank from Charlotte. I bought Wachovia for only 98c/share the
> day it crashed hard, figuring someone would want all those customers and
> locations throughout the South. By Friday Wells-Fargo was offering me
> $7/share, IF the deal went through, but I wanted to sleep that weekend,
> so I dumped it on Friday afternoon at $6.93. My initial investment of
> $10K, which pretty much wiped my account dry on this hunch, became
> $70,714 that week, wiping out my Social Security checks for several
> years after they found out about it....(c;]
>
> I'm only bitter I worked 50 years as an electronics technician, an
> honest work, when I could have made MUCH MUCH better money and lived far
> better all those years if I sat on my ass in front of this screen and
> played with the keys...fixing nothing, contributing nothing to the well
> being of the country.
>
> AAPL's too slow, too expensive. It should have been split many times in
> the past to a more reasonable price that didn't carry with it the
> psychological baggage of being a major investment to the investing
> masses. Wall Street loves it because it rises slowly to sell lots of
> shares they suck off the commissions from, then crashes hard at regular
> intervals causing the suckers to dump it cheap so the cycle can repeat.
> Remember when it WAS $194 Dec 3, 2007, then dropped to $124 Feb 11,
> 2008? Lots of people panicked and lost their ass...LONG INVESTORS.
> Then, it recovered to $181 in May and crashed 3 times in 3 weeks to $82
> and stayed there from the 2nd week in October to the 2nd week in March.
> That must have been just devastating to someone holding on for dear life
> to AAPL as during that dark period It didn't appear it was ever going up
> again....but it came back as the LIES on TV of a "recovery" kept being
> pounded into their heads. I could have bought in March under $100 but
> the multipler to today is only 2X what you paid for it because it's SO
> expensive. No thanks. Panic sets in to these expensive stocks way too
> often when something in the economy glitches....except, of course,
> Warren's Berkshire-Hathaway at $101,000+/share, even after he bought the
> huge railroad...just so he could drive the train...(c;]
>
> I'm a little guy playing penny stocks. It's very addictive, much more
> than a casino where you're guaranteed to lose your ass. Here, you can
> actually win regularly if you're attentive.
>
> I'm not very scientific, though. I like to gamble. Otherwise I'd just
> follow these guys around:
> who daytrade very scientifically over a wide range with great results.
> On the webpage are his trades and earnings. Take a look. He fails just
> like I do, at times. But, he wins a lot more often using scientific
> methods you can learn by simply watching him trade when the market opens
> in the morning. He even lets you watch for free, hoping to sell you
> more. Great fun to listen to while you lose your ass or win....(c;]
>
Tell all that to Warren Buffet. I'm sure he will take your advice, Lar.

(I know it impressed the gals at the Waffle House, tho...)
>> Do you know any frustrated iPhone users who thought they were cool by
>> switching to Verizon's Droid who are now dragging back to home to
>> Apple? I read of one account in an online newspaper tech column today.
>>
>>
>>
>
> Droid users will find that the fantastic Motorola S9 or S9HD bluetooth
> headsets will pair on both handsfree and A2DP bluetooth stereo with the
> Droid, like any other premium Motorola phone with an MP3 player to give you
> simply amazing stereo sound for about a street price of $70-80 for the
> S9HD.
>
> Be very wary of online sales gimmicks promising S9 headsets for $30 from
> online sellphone stores. I had a problem with a busted S9 delivered from
> one of these shysters but the nice people at Chase VISA did a chargeback to
> the merchant who became MUCH more cooperative with an RMA after he found he
> wasn't going to be paid....(c;]
>
> I've never found a better in-the-ear stereo headset than the Motorola S9HD.
> It makes my MotoROKR Z6m phone sound like a huge DJ system...and never
> makes a mechanical noise when you move your head.
They sound well, but the comfort factor keeps me from using them as much as
I would like. (S9HD)
