New to wifi

I've just bought my smart phone and want to find out more about wifi. There are recommended networks to use with my provider (o2). However, I'm wondering what sort of networks other people use. Do you use any open network available when you can connect to it, or is this too risky a thing to do? Does it depend entirely on the network or is it difficult to tell? All advice appreciated, thanks.
