Sony E 580i photo transfer troubles

I have read manual, and using the USB cable, I can't get the phone pictures into computer in "file transfer" mode.

I then downloaded S/E PC Suite 4.0. This uses the USB cable but in "phone" mode. No luck. I was able to transfer music and pics from computer to phone but not the reverse.

My question: is there a step I'm leaving out in taking the pic to save it in a way that will transfer to the computer? The pics are in phone but computer can't "see" them. Pardon the low tech lingo. Thanks.
