Default Choosing A New Router

Hello all! Newbie here!! I have a Linksys Cisco WRT54G2 router that is 3+ years old. I want to upgrade and have no clue what to get in order to have good coverage and be able to connect to 3 devices simultaneously!

So here is what I am looking at and would appreciate any advice I can get from the experts!

I have a 1556 square foot home. The current router has trouble in the farthest corner of the home as far as signal strength goes.

I have 3 devices that I will be using and basically downloading software, surfing, and email will cover the usage that will go on.

The devices are 2 Mac (MacBook and IPad2) and one Windows Flytouch Android 2.3 touch tablet.

I want a router that will support those 3 devices simultaneously, and give good range throughout the home!

Budget would cap at $100.00.

Thanks in advance!!

Jack

Wink I suggest ....

Asus RT-N16 has excellent coverage and it has both a media server (you supply the USB external hard drive up to 1 Tb) and a print server built in.

Cheers!

The only problem with the RT-N16 is it needs the latest firmware so don't hesitate to try the UPDATE each week. The current firmware version is 3.0.0.3.94 and it works quite well. I have a few complaints but overall it is solid.

Also if you use the DOWNLOAD MANAGER firmware/software in the router (I do to fetch BitTorrent files) then it too must be routinely updated. The latest version is 2.1.0.40 (just a few days ago) at it too now works quite well (you need the attached hard drive). However, after you update this software you need to cold-start the router (power off) to get the DM to respond the first time.

Cheers!

ASUS definitely makes some of the better routers on the market right now. The only issues I've ever had with ASUS routers, and really all routers in general, is that the hardware works fine, but the firmware is terrible. I'm testing out the RT-N66U right now, and it's working very well. I'm just waiting for some DDWRT firmware to be released, which I've heard is currently in the works.

The RT-N16, however, already has DDWRT firmware avaliable for it. If your looking for some stable, fast firmware with a crazy amount of features, DDWRT is definitely worth checking out. You can download it from the link below.
