Default External Antenna Mod Advice

Hi All,

I will be wanting to do some wireless surveying while I am in cambodia and require some advice on adding an external antenna to my WiFi card.
The card is a Netgear WG511T - I have a picture of the relevant areas http://hmsv.site.net.au/img/PICT0071.JPG - I am just requiring some advice as to where to connect the external antenna.

Refer to lettering on http://www.centacare-canberra.org/scrap/plan.jpg

I am guessing I can cut the track at "D" just before the element "E" and then solder the core of my Co-Ax to the top of the PCB at point "C" just after the cap "B" which is past the hirose connector "A". Then I will drill a hole through where the element is at "E" and connect the outside shielding of the Co-Ax to the ground plate which is on the underside of the card. (brown shadow) How does this sound?

Thanks for your help,

Vince

Hey Vince,

THat funny little thing A is actually a type of Ufl connector however to date i have been unable to track down a pigtail that will fit it. This is where you want to attach the lead and preferably remove the little capacitor B.
C looks like som form of balancing system, more than likly to try and match the missmatched load of the onboard antenna.

If you were really carefull and your solder skills were prety good i would be tempted to cut the track before it reaches A and about where that little solder pad is. Check forst that this soldr pad is earth as this would be where i would connect the braid on the coax to. then connect the centre of the coax to the main conductor.

Have a look around and see if you can get your hands on some teflon coax, its a little smaller then the LMR-100 but when you are soldering it to the board you are not faced with the same dificulty of the centre insulator melting.
