I have a linksys WRT54GL router, and am considering to replace the stock antennas with one high-gain external antenna that would be located at the top of a pole or roof
Can you tell me what is the maximum (or recommended?) distance for the antenna so that it still works properly?
ie: If the pole is 20 feet high and I lose 10db of signal, then I may as well just try to mount the whole router at the top of the pole?
I wouldn't have the wire from the antenna to the router be any longer than four to five feet, less loss means better performance.
Another alternative is to put a booster between the router and the antenna. It may not work as well as using a shorter wire, but its something to try before moving the router outdoors.
