I haven't had experience with this router, but in essence, there are older wireless G routers out there that run more stable, have more consistent throughput, and better range than this router. D-Link is my choice for network equipment, but every company has a router, or number of routers that everyone says is terrible. The DI-604 is considered D-links best consumer G router, just like the WRT54G is Linksys' best G router. And on occasion you'll grab a router that just doesn't work right. Sometimes you can upgrade the firmware and it will fix the issue.
And for future reference, never buy networking equipment without reading reviews. Here's a good place to start: Real Help For Your Small Network - SmallNetBuilder
You could try some third party firmware on your router. DD-WRT has firmware for many routers on the market right now, including yours. Just find the revision of your router, install the firmware, and see if it makes a difference. Just make sure when you install the firmware, you follow the instructions to the letter. If you don't do it exactly like they say, you might brick your router (make it unusable). As much as I like D-Link, their firmware isn't fantastic.
