I am a newbie to the wireless router world...I am currently looking to replace my older netgear RT314 wired router.....so

A local retailer has the Linksys WRT54G on for $54.99 with an additional $15 manufacture's rebate. They also have a D-Link Xtreme-G 108 Mbps Router on sale for $89.99 with a $30 Manufacture's rebate. I was also wondering about the Linksys WRT54GS with speedboost compared to the WRT54G. Is the WRT54GS better (as far as security and speed) compared to the WRT54G. Is it worth the extra money to go to the WRT54GS ($104), or even the D-link for that matter over the WRT54G?. Any advice/comments would be great. Also all prices are in Canadian dollars. All my network devices would have 802.11g cards.

Also, what distance to you have to be to take advantage of the enhanced g or speedboost function? Will any g card do, or do you have to have a g card that supports speedboost.

Cheers...

PS: I heard that you can upgrade the WRT54G to support the speedboost or enhanced g by third party firmware upgrades. Is this true?

I use the G and the GS, they are rock solid and not flakey like i found the DLink. Admitedly i have used the speedbooster technology and tested it as yet so cant comment there.

The GS is also good if you want to make your own firmware or use openwrt or hyperwrt as you can build it in modules. The GS version gives you more ram to make it bigger and better than the sotck G ones.

I think it comes down to speed doesnt it? correct me if im wrong cos im not sure. The only advantge to the GS systems is the extra speed and slight modifiablity?

Hmm didnt know you could make your own firmware on the GS wookie. Intriguing.
I use the WRT54G and have been using it for a year and a bit and have had no complaints at all. Just too poor to go to the GS i suppose.

Mad,

tyr openwrt.org. You can download the basic kernel then add your own apps to suit. They just have to be in a format acceptable to openwrt unless you compile your own for it. Wokrs on both the G and the GS.

Yes, you have to have Linksys Devices (i.e. PC Cards, PCI Cards, etc) that support the SpeedBoost technology to get the full speed.

And it's manufacturer (sp ck) specific. If you go with D-Link, you'll have to upgrade all of PC/PCI cards to the newer D-Link special versions to match the router.

If it's Linksys WRT-54GS, you'll have to upgrade your PC/PCI cards to the Linksys SpeedBoost versions.

Btw, I found the DD-WRT firmware the best of the ones I tested on my WRT54G v3.0. www.dd-wrt.com
