Default Newbie with basic router (linsky E3200) installation questions.

When I purchased the router today a guy in the store told me not to use the included setup CD. He said it would just screw me up. I am now very confused because I can't find anything about that on the net. I did check out the company site and all indications are that I should. I did note that many said that I should update the firmware. If I use the software CD will it guide me to update the firmware? Should I use the included CD, was the guy at the store wrong? I will be hard wiring to my desktop (windows 7) and will be using wifi on new laptop.

using the CD ranks right up there with asking for directions or owning Barbie dolls or knowing whether fewsha goes with mawv. guys don't do it.

type the routers IP address in your web browser after the http:// and go from there

I am a retired Navy guy that is new to routers. I have no idea what the routers IP address is. Understanding that I know little about routers or home networks I just need to know if it would be wiser to use the CD and let it guide me through the process. My plan is to hook up my new laptop to a wireless router so I can access the net while my wife is working on the desktop and to be able to access some of the files on the desktop from the laptop.

I installed the Linksys E1200 using the CD. Very easy and it worked like a charm. I set up two Laptops and an i-pad. During the set up process, you can add as many Laptops/Tablets as you want. the IP for your device will be 192.168.1.1, but use the CD and it will be fine.

You can always go to the manufacturers website and download updated software at a later time if you need to.
