Default replace integrated wifi laptop card?

My boyfriend has a gateway laptop with a realtek 8187B USB integrated wifi card. This card had problems from the beginning, which partially were solved by installing newer drivers. But realtek hasn't updated the drivers for this model from 08.2008 and the card is still giving a lot of request timed out, especially in upload. This is very frustrating when it comes to gaming, as he keeps getting disconnected, and also chatting on skype.
He would like to replace it with another one, but we have no idea if we can make it ourselves, as we didn't see any integrated cards for sale.
He would prefer to change this one, and not buy a external one, as he has only 3 USB ports.
Any ide if this can be done, and from where to buy a laptop card?

Default Replacing intergrated (sp) wifi card

What is the make/model of your laptop? Most wifi cards are PCImini cards and are really easy to replace. I recenently had to open my HP laptop for a good dusting
was a mtter of flipping the comp over, removing a cover ( shold be ony one small phillips screw) , unpluging ( carefully) the antenna connectors, removing one or two more phillips head screws, then sliding the card out of the connector. QED. Tricky part is finding an internal wireless card that fits the antenna lead connectors.. will be either MMCX or SMA... Do a google for Internal Wireless MiniPCI Cards.

your best bet is to use a long range USB adapter like the 200mW engeniu eub-362 ext

EUB-362 EXT* 200mW 802.11g USB adapter

that means no USB adapters, Keenan.

Umm.. does he have a free ethernet port? or PCMCIA slot available?

Having a hard time sourcing internal cards for under $120
