Default Set auto-answer on iDEN i760 by Nextel/Sprint

Help!
I am trying to set the S0 register to 1 on a cell phone modem. This is for a motorola i760 with Nextel/Sprint service. I have done this by using HyperTerminal ATS0=1 (to set autoanswer) followed by AT&W0, AT&W1, and AT&W2 (to set the S0 value in non-volatile RAM), but anytime I unplug the data cable, the S0 is reset back to 0!!! I know this because when I call the data number, it just rings and rings. Any help/insight will be greatly appreciated.
