Lightbulb Setting a HotSpot - Hardware Needed for Long Distance

Hello Guys, I want to setup a HotSpot around a gated community that has atleast 100 Buildings, not higher than two floors each, and trees are also on path. I've been looking in different antennas and range extender amplifier and to many to choose from. My main goal is to try to cover as much area as possible without having buy big antennas and etc. This are some example that I have came up with and consideration but if there is any better suggestion please let me know. Remember is a HotSpot, all around 360 degrees. If it matters I have 2 routers, Linksys WRT54G v8 with DD-WRT running at Tx Power 160mw with heatsink and fans and the second one is a Linksys WRT54G-TM with DD-WRT running at Tx Power 251mw with heatsink, fan, W/SD/MMC Support. I live in a second floor apartment.

RadioLabs 500 mWatt 2.4 GHz Wireless Range Extender Amplifier The antenna that this amplifier is attached with is a 5dbi but want to upgrade them to a 16dbi Antenna.

2.4GHz 16dBi TNC Wireless WiFi Omni Terminal Antenna

Any suggestion other than this are always welcome. Thank you in advance.

Bullpies.

That is a 9 dBi antena. 16 dBi defies the laws of physics. I would not believe any claim over 12 dBi unless it came from a very reputable seller.

Here is the same antenna, but 2 for $3 less:

2 X 9dBi Gain Omni RP TNC Folding WIFI Antenna F/ Cisco - eBay (item 220427889960 end time Oct-02-09 00:48:19 PDT)

you will note that this seller calls it 9 dBi.

"Range Extender Amplifier":

Bullpies.

It's a two way radio. If you don't increase the power on the other end you are talking to clients who can't talk back. If you extend the range on the transmit side you just interfere with other networks nearby. Don't believe any bullpies about a preamp in a range extender . To get any more performance out of a 2.4 gHz front end than we get right now you would have to cool the first couple of transistors with Peltier coolers or liquid nitrogen.

you have SOHO routers running in a range where the RF signal is distorted. Distorted RF signals generate too many problems to go into here.

20 users is a maximum effort load for a SOHO router. calculate the maximum number of users at any one time, divide by 20. that is the minimum number of routers you need.

First, something along the lines of open-mesh dot org may be a great place to start.
Now, are you bringing in a commercial T1 line or such? Or is your plan to use your residential internet service and rent it out? The 2nd option will eventually land you in some serious doo-doo.
One, every person logging onto the web will be represented as being at your modem. Child porn, etc, all linked back to you. Illegal downloads are getting flagged by many providers now (dvd's..etc) and it'd all fall back on you.
Two, such an arrangement would violate any terms of service you had with your provider and they could cancel you at any time.

But if you're going to do it right, open mesh may be the solution. Not cheap, but thorough, and you'd just add units as needed.

Thanks for pointers Heck, never thought about the Illegal use. About internet provider, I don't have one, i been online for over 3 years without paying any money. I need this to go far for Advertising purpose only, not really for clients to be taking my bandwidth. LOL

Hello Mark, I didn't quiet understood the section about the range extender amplifier. I am planning on using 2 of the range extender amplifier to be able to communicate back and forth. I don't know if you thought I was just using one of them for Transmitting only. Please let me know. Also can you please tell me or help me find a reputable antenna with high dBi remember omni directional and something I can just have on the router, near by, not on a poll or tree or on roof. Thank you
