Default setting up a wireless network

i was wondering if there is a way to setup a wireless network so that i might use my laptop anywhere in my house but without having a seperate computer setup with a router. in other words can i set up a router somehow by its self that plugs into the modem and into a wall outlet for power?

I am going to assume the device you are calling a modem already exists and that it is some sort of Router or xDSL modem (not dialup)

If the modem has an Ethernet connection you can just plug a wireless AP into that and connect wirelessly to the AP hence giving you access to the internet. There is more to do than just pluging the AP into the modem to get it to work.

If the modem doesn't have an Ethernet connection then you may have to look at replacing it with either a modem that does, or preferably a wireless router. A wireless router will give you connection to the internet, connection via a wired LAN and connection via a wireless LAN.

Whilst my answer is not explicit the terms are correct and should give you some indication of what may be required for your aplication.

Regards

Fred

This is for XP

Open your network connections
Right click on the wireless connection and click Properties
Click the Advanced tab
You will now see something about sharing your internet connection

NOTES:
XP doesn't have a DHCP server, so you will need to setup IP on all of the laptops manaully. If you don't know how to do this there are plenty of articals on the net, google is your friend.
You may need to alter your firewall settings to accomodate the new setup.

I hope this helps

Regards

Fred
