Default a small question about wifi

hello, first of all i want ot say is that i am totaly new in it.
all i wanted to know is just is there a way that will power up wifi acess point? what i mean is just open th access point and just conect it to something( i am thinking in big antena) and do something that will power it up so it will catch signals in 1 km radius...

At a VERY basic level...?

Get a PCMCIA WiFi card that allows an antenna connection and stick the biggest arial on it you can.

I've captured signals from over 1/2 a Km away with one of these baby's from my rooftop but now I have a fixed line so don't need it
