Default Suggestion for a wireless network

Hi all. I would like your help in a issue i am facing now. This is how things are:

- My home doesn't have ethernet wiring.
- I have in my room (upstairs), a router, SpeedTouch 585(i) v6 (with wireless capability)
- I have a set top box (satellite receiver) with ethernet interface. The receiver is in the living room (downstairs), where the TV is.

The receiver must have constant internet access. I don't want to use wires, as they will mess things up. So i must go to a wireless solution.

I already know about Netgear's solution with XE102 powerline. 2 devices that use the electrical wiring of the house and create a lan. This solution is somewhat expensive.

My search showed that a wireless ethernet bridge might do the job. Something like that:

http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?event=v...5FUSA&pid=1474

I am open to suggestions. Which wireless ethernet bridges are for the thing i want? (to connect to my wireless router [802.11g support] and provide constant internet access to my set top box(receiver).

Sorry for my long post, but i tried to be exact and clear. Any suggestions are welcomed. If you need more info please don't hesitate to ask me. After all i need the help.

Just a plain old Access Point should do the job. Most reasonable devices have bridging capability. Look at the Linksys WAP54G device as a reference.

Note about bridging devices, not all devices are compatable in bridge mode. I would just use AP mode and turn on any security that is supported by both devices.

Regards

Fred

Thanks for the suggestion FredZ. So every access point that supports 802.11g is good for my case.

I must mention that my ADSL is 1024/128 Kbps and that the receiver would be 5 meters away from the Router. Is the distance (and the relatively slow connection) a problem in this case?

I am waiting and other suggestion. I am looking for cheap solutions which can be found in Europe.

Thanks again FredZ.

Well I would assume that 5Mtr wouldn't be to much of an issue, buit many factors affect wifi signals, in particular obstructions. Since you are wanting to run the signal between floors, you will need to contend with ensuring the signal is capable of travelling through whatever the building is made of. Concrete and steel are about some of the worst materials and you may not even go through that if they are only on opposit sides of the wall.

As for the AP, my suggestion is don't buy an unknown branded device, buy something that is known and reputable. Yes you pay more for it, but in mosty cases you are getting what you pay for. I use exclusively Linksys WAP54G devices as there is plenty of third party firmware and support available for them. Again, they are not cheap. I did start buy buying a very cheap device to start with. Now I have several hundred WAP54G devices that cost 3 times what the cheap one did, but I don't have issues with them. Please don't go and buy a WAP54G just decause I have them, do some homework, there are several of great brands out there that will do the job you want.

Regards

Fred

Greetings FredZ

Having in mind your opinion about the obstructs between the router and the bridge, i am considering again the option of the powerline series of plugs. With a more detailed research i found other brands with the same product. At the moment i think that the following kit suits to my needs and the price is good.

Powerline Strom StarterKIT dLAN 28 Mbit Vista kompartbl - eBay Powerline Adapter Bridges, Netzwerk, Modems Adapter, Computer (end time 03-Oct-07 09:43:17 BST)

Ofcourse this isn't a wireless solution but i thing it might be more reliable. What do you think?

Default bridge

I would go with the 400mW EnGenius ECB-3220

Keenan Systems Wireless Store Featuring Engenius

you can set it up as a ethernet bridge and it will easly cover that distance.

You can also enable the new universal wirelss repeater mode.

This will rebroadcast your signal so you will get a better connection on your laptop downstairs.

Keenan,

I've seen your other posts and have checked out the EnGenius ECB-3220. We are moving to another campground that has one AP with a directional antenna, coverage is not real good and some area's get no signal.

What would be ideal for this new campground would be some outdoor repeaters. Can the Engenius be used outdoors? If I talk the campground owner into replacing the directional antenna with an omni directional antenna, how would this effect people currently in the path of the signal on the outskirts? The Engenius says it is universal, the unit used by the campground is a ZyXel system which I know nothing about, haven't even heard of them before, but are you sure this system will be compatible?

The owner would like me to help him improve the campground signal so more people in the campground will be able to get internet, (that is good for business). We live in a mountainous area of Colorado, lots of tree's, RV's, etc, so setting up a full coverage system will be challenging to say the least.

I also notice the EnGenius says it must get a good signal in order to work, but to cover campground area's, you can't just put a repeater every 100 feet, if I understand how repeaters work, each repeater will cut the bandwidth in half. What would you suggest? You can email me privately or here,

Dano
