Default Trying to broadcast wireless signal .5 mi

Alright, I'm trying to broadcast my satellite internet signal and my wireless network to my parents house. Their house is approximately .5 miles away across open feilds. I already have a Linksys WRT300N router, and a Linksys WAP54G that was left over from an upgrade at my place of work.

I plan to have the WRT300N at my house recieving input from the satellite modem and assigning IP addresses to the network. I plan to put the WAP54G at my parents house, so they can access the network.

I am going to buy two Backfire 2.4 GHz WiFi Antenna (15 d from Radio Labs to send the signal across the fields.

My questions are will there be a problem with the BackFire Antennas broadcasting a signal coming from the WRT300N, and will the WAP54G work in conjuction with the WRT300N? If there is a for-seeable problem should I just bite the bullet and go get Wireless-G router. I hate to do this since my Desktop and my laptop have wireless-N cards in them.

Your WAP54G will not talk to your WRT300N in Bridge/AP Client modes, and I a not even sure it will work in Repeater Mode. You will only be able to use AP mode.

As for the antennas you shouldn't have to much of a problem except that the WAP54G has 2 antenna sockets and with the standard firmware you cannot turn 1 of the sides off so that you can use only 1 antenna. I have only tested mustdie but this only works on a ver2 WAP54G. There are others that will work with ver 3 WAP54Gs.

As for the "N" question, I would tend to lock the WRT to B/G mode anyway as "N" is still very problematic regardless of manufacturer.

Is there a problem with connecting the Backfire Antenna to the wrt300N by means of taking one of the short antennas off and replacing it with the connection to the Backfire antenna, or would it be best to connect the Backfire antenna into the WRT300N by means of a RJ-45 plug into one of the lan ports. If their is something better to run the antenna to before connecting it to the router please tell me. I am trying to keep this as simple stupid as possible.

Also regarding the setup down at my parents house someone today made the suggestion of runnning their Backfire antenna into a switch then coming from the switch with the WAP54G. What do you think of this? I also took the time to look at the version number on the WAP54G and it is version two.

I know nothing of the backfire antenna, but if it is just an antenna then you have to connect it directly to the device you want to use it with. I have never seen an antenna that connects via the Ethernet port and I suspect it is impossible.

There is a firmware for your WAP54G V3 that will give you the option of using just 1 of the antenna sockets. The file is called wap54g_v3-3.08-HiPower.104.zip but I can't remember where I got it, I think it may have been linksysinfo.com
When you go to set up the antenna you will want to go to the wireless section of the setup in your WAP54G and change the antenna from diversity to the side you will be using.

That will resolve the problems with your WAP54G

I don't know anything about your Router so I will leave that for someone else to answer.

Regards

Fred

I'm using a mikrotik routerboard 133 with mikrotik r52 miniPCI wireless card and a 15dBi d-link omni antenna.
The purpose is to share internet access with friends about 3 miles away. They are using Alfa outdoor 400mW access point.
I'm sure such equipment will do it fine.
