Default USB cable length? HOW FAR?!

okay so im going to mod a DSE usb client adapter and stick it on my roof on a pole and was wondering if it is okay to run 15M of USB cable up to it or will this not work? i have a powered USB hub connected to my computer so this may help?

any info on USB cable lengths would be great

I was under the impression you could only use about 6m of USB cable before you needed a hub of sorts in the middle. Could be wrong!

USB is not designed for long cable runs unfortunetely. There is a slight chance it will work but probably not. Your mains options would be to add multiple hubs, as the FAQ recommends, or move the adapter or use something more suited for long runs e..g. ethernet

What you are trying to do is outside the USB spec, - but, with active extension cables such as the DSE XH8199 5m cable you may be able to get it to work.
Alot depends on the surrounding enviroment such as electrical noise generating appliances, motors, flourecent lights etc.

If you can keep the USB cable away from mains cables it is likely to work ok.

I have run a mouse and a keyboard over 16M of cat5 cable, thru a wall socket and a patch panel, and the associated cables, and it worked fine, but they are low speed.

Initially I tried a USB hub on the cable, and it didnt work, good thing there are 4 pairs in cat5 eh

Over at http://www.usbwifi.orcon.net.nz/ they are saying that they have sucessfully used 25m of standard usb cabling with their usb wifi nic.
