Default Wifi dead zones

Hi, I'm an end user but capable of following instructions!

I have a Netgear router connected to my PC in an upstairs room and I also have a laptop that I would like to use in the living room. Is there a foolproof way of ensuring I avoid any dead-spots in my home as currently my laptop is unable or very rarely able to connect via WiFi - I've tried moving the router but I can't relocate it without having trailing cable down the stairs - even I did relocate the router there's no guarantee my laptop would pick up the signal. I've read about signal boosters that work via the mains socket i.e. plug one in the upstairs room and one in the living room for the laptop to pick up the signal from - could anyone recommend any products?

Thanks for any advice. Paul
