Hey everyone, I'm not a computer person in the least, but I am machanicly inclined. I recently baught a house 300ft away from a campus dormitory. The dorm is 12 stories high, and there are 3 wireless transmitters on every floor. My laptop unfortunatly will only pick up the signal if i am less than 100 feet away from the building.
I know nothing about routers and such, but I was wonderring if there would be a way for me to purchase a Long Range reciever for wireless internet? Is there any way for me to pick up the free wifi?
I can set up a wireless network for a house, but when it comes to specialized equipment i'm stumped....
I attempted to look online for answers, but the termanology didn't make too much sense to me. I guess i think of a reciever as something recieves, not something that makes a signal for something else to recieve .....
if you need me to explain my possition further just say so.
essentially, I know there is a wifi signal 300ft away 12 stories in the air. my computer will only pick up a signal 100 feet away. I am planning on installing a wireless router, but what can i buy so that I can recieve the internet from the dorm?
The best way to do this is to use another wireless gateway and set up the two gateways (both must have the capability) as a point-to-point connection. Then you can set up wired ethernet connections on both sides to your heart's content. I would recommmend looking at Avaya hardware to perform this task.
