Wireless Router Compatibility

Hello , i m new to this Forum.

I m living in Japan and using ADSL with Modem and a Switch from NTT(Service Providers). I m using a Workgroup in my office using the Switch connected to the Modem.
I bought a New laptop now i want to connect to Internet Wirelessly using some Wireless Router.
Is compatibility an issue while buying a new Router?
I mean do i have to check whether the Wireless Router is Compatible with my Modem or not??
