Hi, I have a wireless link running to my sisters house (1km) using WRT54GS running WRT-DD firmware (WDS, 100mw) and 9dbi omni antenneas at each. I am wondering if the linksys PCI card wmp54gs with 3-4 metres of lmr-400 and a biquad anttenna would work ok at about 700m (with line of sight) form one of the AP's? Does anyone have any experience with the WMP54GS at longer ranges? Thanks, Lyndon
I haven't used that particular card but virtually any good PCI card like that will effortlessly pull 700m LOS with an external antenna, as long as you use decent antenna cable and don't run more than a few metres. I have sucessfully done this with several Atheros-based 802.11g PCI cards.
Be careful when hacking the power of your Linksys AP, some of them have been known to die prematurely with the output wound too far up.
