Default WRT54G question

A quick question regarding the WRT54G using the latest linksys firmware... I was thinking about the WRT54G as a router-router not Internet connection NAT sharing device.

I've heard in router mode rather than gateway, even though it disables NAT, it leaves the firewall on effectively stumping the purpose of it as a router rather than a NAT device. Do you know if the firewall can be turned off yet in router mode to allow WAN to LAN traffic for static routing purposes?

I'm just thinking out loud here, but I'm thinking of a wi-fi peering exchange example in my head. A WRT54G at two locations on the same channel but out of range from each other, and a backbone on 5GHz that also has a master router for keeping traffic seperate from each peering exchange unless it needs to be routed to the other. But a firewall on the WAN of the WRT54G in router mode will keep this idea on the back burner.

I even thought about getting real complex and using two 5GHz channels for a full-duplex backbone using Assymetric routing to keep send/receive trafffic on their own channels. I've tested Assymetric routing with a couple of PC's with two network cards (operating in half duplex) in them while splitting traffic over two different links quite sucessfully to avoid more latency so far.

It would be good to see the likes of up there in Auckland establish a peering exchange wirelessly of some sorts with inter-routing whether it be static or dynamic between wi-fi network access points.

Cheers,
Gavin.

If you load the 3rd party firmware you can do what ever you want. Firewall, no firewall, advanced routing etc.

Is it the same web based easy to follow interface on the thrid party stuff?

I don't know enough about stuff like linux and/or command inputs or scripting or stuff that it seems a lot of mod's require you to know. I like something that just works and has an easy interface to figure out. Although I do know how to flash stuff etc...

If you ask citylink nicely, they may let you setup a few bits of rack gear in APE... This will of course allow easy expandability into an upstream provider's network should nzw auckland ever go down that path...

http://www.sveasoft.com/ is the place you want to go but you might have to pay money to get the firmware. There are plenty of places that have their firmware on the web. If you don't have any luck getting it either post here again or ask in IRC.
