Yes... you might find a 'hardware' AP useful... running long Co-Ax cables is signal-destroying...
For an antenna... try a Borg WaveGuide (see the shop)
AP: WRT54G/GS
Antenna: Borg 8Slot WaveGuide
jump on NodeDB and plug your node in...
The AP will need to be as close to the antenna as possible... i.e. outside... so adequate waterproofing is needed...
The antenna is not omnitdirectional... you'll need to choose the 120degrees that you want covered.. you can only use one antenna per AP
Well crap... it SHOULD.
What's the other antenna for then?
I would've thought it could work on a different frequency.
And if it's used for internal use, then in theory it could work outside.
Otherwise I guess I might have to look at getting two cheap(but good) AP's.
Oh well enough ranting :P
the other antenna is used with a system called diversity... which means that the AP looks on both antennas for a client... it doesnt work... because when it finds the client it locks to that antenna...
There is only one wireless card in an accesspoint... therefore only one frequency at a time...

Wait a minute... if it's on the same frequency, why can't you use an antenna facing the other way? :?
Shouldn't it work slightly like radio, it's broadcast in whatever direction, but as long as your stereo is on the same frequecny, it receives it. So can't you have multiple clients in 2 directions on the same frequency?

It will only ever transmit on one antenna, it recieves on both and uses the best one. This is like car radio antennas, you get 2 shitty antennas in the glass on the front and back, and the stereo will use the best signal since the chances of them both being in a deadspot are a lot lower then just one being in a deadspot. Diversity only helps if there is non-line of sight so its of no use generally in a fixed installation.
Is there any equipment that will let you broadcast a reasonable distance in 360 degrees(is it possible, seeing as factory antenna is meant to allow 360)?

You will need to get a vertical omnidirectional antenna as they are 360° - look at www.fab-corp.com - Theres a nice big one on there homepage - but with more gain you have a narrower beam, and since the clients will need a directional antenna, you would be better off having more gain there then at the AP so you have less risk of a a client being too high/low to get good signal from the AP
you can get a 360 degree waveguide for horizontal polarity if you wish.. give Borg a look
As for vertically polarised omni's (which are essentially colinears by the way) give lascom a yell. They're based in Lower Hutt and sell Pacific Wireless gear, amongst other brands.. it'd certainly be easier than importing
Where in WGP are you, what areas can you "Line Of Sight" to ? Also, anyone else here in WGP should mention where they are, we might get a bit of a network going if there is enough coverage (I am in little manly on the hill (by the palms)) and ther may be a couple of people in Army Bay as well.
Wel Hilly there is on Ladies Mile, in Manly. I'm up on Roberts Road. You should be able to look above Tindalls/Matakatia and see a bunch of houses, and then a blanked out spot(trees that need to be trimmed) and that's my place.
Still get a lot of coverage though, and will get a lot more once the trees are trimmed. Not sure how far out towards Army Bay I can see... but can see a fair bit of the area around it.
Hi,
I am located on the Duncansby Rd cliff-top.
To the east I have LOS to Tindalls beach as well as the Roberts Rd hill behind it. I can also see the end of the point containing Ardern Ave.
To the west, I have LOS to Hatfields Hill and the end of Orewa Beach.
I would be interested in achieving connectivity with others on the coast.
Gee that sounds like you can see the other 2 (roadkill and hilly) via LOS. We should be able to set something up perhaps. Unfortunately I'm still a bit lost as to where everything is (although I do know roberts rd). Does anyone here know who can and cant get dsl on the peninsula, I know Army Bay doesnt (or at least parts of army bay).
I think that it is only likely that I can see Roadkill by LOS.
Here is my interpretation of approximately where everyone is, although I am not sure where the Palms in Manly are.
{Map}
Yeah that's about right for me.
I get adsl... but my phone line is cut off
You guys interested in a lan?
I'm going to try and get a local lan up and going... "HBC Lan", unless someone else has the name, and I don't know about it.
Will be running it mid school holidays... so in April I think.
