Default General Wifi network

Hi,

I am looking to get a wifi network set up around napier and would like more information on how to get the area coverage higher.

I know how to set up a simple network but would like to cover a larger area (city wide in a few years).

My idea at the moment is to have a central server with a large antenna on the roof. From there we expand coverage by using relay computers with windows xp. The relay computers would have 2 cards, with their networks bridged (i have no idea how to do this in linux and would like to keep prices down). One card would have a 360 antenna for serving close by users and the other card would have a long range directional antenna pointing back to the server.

I would like to keep prices down as much as i can and would like to expand the network as far as possible. Most of the city is on flat land and residential. Also I dont like having to use the idea of computers relaying the data but would rather access points with 2 antennas.

Would there be a way to have 2 or more relay units (computers or ap's) all on the same network so the server dishes out ip addresses ?

If i were to offer internet access, i am currently looking at an old copy of wingate to manage users access. Also does anyone know of a way in which i can offer internet at a very low cost. Currently shared jetstart is on the board. :(

A search on google on wifi networks with keywords how to build wifi network city returns a number of cities websites. I am looking for instructions and guides. Anyone able to give me any useful urls to good sites???

My end goal is to work with the council and offer wifi internet access in the local parks, CBD and L/WAN access to home users.

Any comments greatly appreciated.

Have you seen Airnet's prices.

I have a jetstart connection for 15gb per month at home and it costs me about $70. Airnet charges $238 + GST per month for 3 GB (speed not recognised)

Also i want people to be able to access each others computers for p2p gaming without the need for a server of mine to be used. Airnet doesnt allow this.
