Hi and welcome to NZ Wireless,

It is a very good question you pose, something no doubt we have all thought about but have yet to put pen to paper and flesh out our driving motivation.

As only one of a number of people involved in the Auckland Wireless project (for which we have yet to find a name guys!) I would suggest that the aim and goals would be to "create a community wireless network that covers the greater Auckland area".

It should be a free network which is open to all people. It needs to be a controlled network to ensure that there are no conflicts on the network and thus would have to be organized and administered by a number of individuals. As has happened in some overseas networks which I have read about in their forums the people organising the network would be doing out of love. No doubt somewhere down the line someone will complain that their node application are slow to be processed or that there isn?t certain services available. One thing we need to keep in mind is that this is a free community network. No one is paid to administer it.

I imagine a network where there will be numerous nodes in the CBD and suburbs such that you could connect on portable devices as you move about the Auckland area. Hopefully an ISP will get on board and provide free internet access in return for advertising on the site down track.

As the network gets bigger hopefully more businesses will recognise the potential to reach lots of people and offer either more sites for antennas or good prices for people trying to get on the network from home.

Although this concept of operation will take time we should aim high and infact maybe even set down some actual timeline goals. I would add that putting timelines on people to spend their hard earned money would not work, getting in contact with potential people or businesses to help us would.

Well this is a lot longer than I planned to write but that is just my view and not necessarily those of the greater community.

Thanks wookie, yea, pretty much my thoughts

Although as far as i can see it i'm aiming for world domination

short term goal: setup nodes around the areas, get some clients to connect to the nodes

mid term goal: get the nodes connected via a backbone in the same city

long term goal: get all the networks in each city connected together, so it really will be nzwireless, rather than just auckland wireless etc

Interconnected nodes has to come to make the whole thing worthwhile.

With just a few guys around the corner from each other connected, it kinda limits what can be done on it, but once the nodes are connected, then it becomes a lot more usefull.

Any why does there need to be a reason. Shouldnt because we can be reason enough?!

I also dont think we should limit ourselves to the realm of wireless, running ethernet to the neighbours is effective and damn cheap.

nodes can be interconnected via tunnels on the internet if national traffic is ever made free on jetstream (Jetstream starter is so slow as to be useless for it)

In any case, the heart of the network lies in the linkups, not the people connecting to the nodes. Once there is something there, they will come
