Default High speed (cable) internet connection needed

Hi all,

I host websites and other services, but have run into a massive barrier (or three). That being my heineously insufficient 2mbit JetStream connection, with only [gasp] 192K upstream speed.

The second is the 10GB/month bandwidth cap. This is getting dangerously higher every month, and soon we will be paying $100/month just on bandwidth charges. In one recent month we payed $188 extra for going over the 10GB cap. We could go on the """flat rate""" plan, but I have seen the stunting effects of 64k on our network - so slow that things just time out.

This is no longer sufficient to cope with demand on the server, so I have decided that we need something more. This is especially true as we are looking (read: ready to) deploy a new server which needs a second IP address, which Telecom will not allow. Orcon currently provides one static IP address - we use NAT for the rest of the PCs, but each server needs a public IP address.

I have outlined a list of what we need in terms of internet:

At least 2 static IP addresses
Approximately 20GB / month
Around 5-15Mbit upstream (Downstream is not as important, 2mbit should suffice but 5mbit or so is much preferred) - Note: the large upstream is because a main use of the connection is serving - we usually have around 25 connections at most times - 35 at peak, 2 or 3 at night.

We are happy to provide all our own routing equipment etc.

Does ANYONE know where such a connection could be obtained at reasonable prices (must be reliable).

Approximate price range is around $250/month or less. I looked at Citylink (no idea of prices so sent an e-mail), but they only do CBD. Then I found that the prices are really high. (This is in Brooklyn BTW).

As for the wireless relevance? I was considering a service in which people can wirelessly connect, run a server and take advantage of this high speed connection I will be getting . Don't know how realistic that is but...

Note this is my first post here, be nice to me

Cheers George

If you're wanting to host off the connection then I recommend you look at something like frame relay. Jetstream or wireless won't cut it if you're wanting a reliable connection for hosting.

Either that or possibly look at collocating your servers at an ISP's datacenter, as it's a lot cheaper than trying to deliver bandwidth out to your building

Do you have to do the physical hostsing yourself, if so why? It is a heck of alot cheaper to use other peoples hosting platforms. Usually you can get significant access to create / setup / configure domains, sites, SQL DB's etc

Interesting news, got a reply to an e-mail from telstra saying that a plan such as what I want may be possible. They're just checking our location now.

As for the reason? We are a hosting company (among other things), so we do need our own servers. Also, I find it better when running an online shop to host it on your own servers for several reasons.

I have looked at colocating, but have found high prices and low speeds. It would be good otherwise.

For example, for $350/month at Iconz (6 month contract) or $250/month (24 month contract) you get unlimited national traffic, but only a 10Mbit link.

Paying that much for a 10Mbit link on top of still needing to pay for some form of internet for our business would unfortunately be uneconomical.

And frame relay is even more expensive and only goes up to 2Mbit.

A nice 155Mbit ATM link wouldn't go amiss though

Default Someone able to help

If I understand you correctly, I suspect you need to talk to Lateral Management. http://www.Lateral.net.nz this link will give you an indication of what they offer. I understand that Lateral Management has spent a great deal of time and effort tracking down the most reliable, affordable and flexible methods to host/serve. They will be able to point you in the right direction. Flick them an email and see what you get back.
Regards
Robin

I doubt you'd need anything above 10Mbit for hosting, depends what you're hosting though. If you're just hosting small sites with low traffic you could get away with 2Mbit easily, although if you're hosting media heavy sites, such as mp3 downloads, streaming video etc, you'd probably want 100Mbit.

You can get multiple frame relay connections, up to 4 (i think). Just a bit of FYI, 2day.com hosts about 40,000 sites (afaik) and up until recently was running on 8Mbit (4x2Mbit frame). Now they're on fibre, which is idealy what you should be on if it's in your area.

If you're hosting on a residentual product like jetstream, cable or wireless, then you're going to have outages, you will not get the maximum bandwidth your connection can support (residentual products usually have a low CIR and bandwidth is oversold by about 10 times, this is the only way of staying profitable).

I hope you don't work for these people, because that is one of the worst corperate websites I've seen, no information, crappy javascript effects, doesn't work in firefox

If you know people in this company, maybe show them Macromedia Flash, or tell them to put up some actual information about their products and services.

I don't mean to be offend, just trying to help out.

This website has been in place since day one. It was only put there to give people an idea  of who they are and what they do. I myself don't work for Lateral Management, but I know some people who do. There has been no need to update as it does tell you all you need to know. As I said, email them and you may find what you’re looking for.

I just get a blank, black page in Firefox...

I'll try it in IE after dinner.

Thanks for all your help guys.

And yes, even 2Mbit will suffice for now. But 192k won't.

Well, I looked at that Lateral site,

I must agree it is poorly designed. But back to the point, it didn't look particularly relevant, as they appear (from the small amount of information) to be more of a company that would sell domain names, design websites (their site kinda turns you away from that!) etc, rather than an ISP or telehousing company.

Thanks anyway Robin.

I replied to the e-mail from Telstra, I will let you know how that goes.

Cheers George

That site looks very interesting, so I have sent them an e-mail.

Yeah, neither can my friend on Xtra.

And my worry is, if some people can't get to THEIR site, can they get to mine?

I fear my site may only be available to APE, if so then I won't be using them.

I also have a guy from TelstraClear coming over on Monday to discuss my options, so that will sort out whether cable is an option or not.

I think it will be myself, as IMO 2mbit/2mbit would be great.

Cheers George
