Default Newbie struggling with making decisions

Hi, I have just bought a notebook that I would like to connect wirelessly to my good 'ol faithful DSE router.
Can some-one please give me some impartial advice on what PCMCIA card & matching WAP to purchase.
I have my eye on a Linksys WAP54G & WPC54G as well as a Dlink DWL-G650+ & DWL-2000AP+.
Or should I go for a Linksys product??? Help!
My router is downstairs & I plan to work upstairs on the notebook, downloading files off the main computer as well as surfing the net.
I also have a 2.4 GHZ cordless phone, will this interfere?
Many thanks

I would go with the linksys - consider the wrt54g tho, its not much more then the wap, and its where all the modding is focused.

Does the notebook not have a minipci slot you can put a card into rather then a annoyingly stickey out cardbus one? you wont find 802.11G in a pcmcia, but unless you have bought a dinosaur that prob wont be an issue.

yeah the phone may interfere with it... depends on the channel

As for PCMCIA you WILL find G card around...

go linksys... especially the wrt54g, it has heaps of added options like updated firmware that offers heaps of better and super user options..

i have played with dlink... it is flakey.

I have found Planet to be a good product as well.

Access Point http://www.planet.com.tw/product/product_d...=190&menu_id=14

PCMCIA Card http://www.planet.com.tw/product/product_d...=165&menu_id=14

I have also had good results with the Linksys WRT54G.

I have always found D-Link to lack in Receiving Signals.

Thanks for all the info guys, it's been a great help...I phoned up Toshiba to ask them if my A70 had a mini pci slot but all the REALLY helpful tech could tell me (ad nauseum) was that the machine had no internal aerial...Does anyone know whether the A70 has a slot & if so whether an aerial coule be retrofitted?
Thanks once again.

Yup I've read TFM, as well as AMFQuestions but the answer it seems lies in the manual not mentioning a mini PCI slot.
It looks like I have to get a stickyouty card.
many thanks anyway.

remarkable.. I used the pdf search function and a whole bag of results came up

To answer your antenna question, you'd probably have a hard time installing an antenna internally and you'd most likely be better off using a blade antenna...
