Default Newbie Testing Question

Hi guys, have a problem for you to respond to if you don't mind.

Got the AP box up and running as per HOWTO instructions but am not able to test it. (Although it tested OK at the Workshop on the weekend). I have borrowed a Laptop with a Wifi Wireless connection in it but when I look at the connection it it says "Network Cable Unplugged".

The Laptop = Tosh Satellite Pro 4600. Checked HW properties (Win2000) and the card is a Toshiba Wiress_Lan_Card. Everything seems to be working OK. (Except the Wireless connection ofcourse).

Checked settings to make sure it's on DHCP and stuff and it's less than a metre away from the AP but don't see anything obvious.

What should I be checking? (I'm just about to remove and reinstall the device for default drivers...)

Cheers
Matt. :?:

That sounds pretty weird...like it cant talk to wlan0 on the AP.

Run "ifconfig" on the AP and make sure wlan0 shows up. If it does, possibly the card in the laptop is bung? What if you double click on the icon in the system tray for the WLAN connection, can you see a list of SSIDs?

Is the WLAN connection in the lappie known to be good?

BTW you might get more people seeing the question if you post to the mailing list as well, I dont know how many ppl check the forums regularly

It sounds like the wlan card in the laptop isn't working properly, wlan cards aren't like ethernet cards as in, when they don't have a connection they won't say "network connection unplugged" as, umm..., there isn't a plug in the first place

What sort of card is on the laptop? As james said, has it been know to work in the past? If so, then it's time to start debugging the linux box

Hi,

I was just surfing this site and saw your question and thought that I would join and let you know something that i have found with wireless nic's and windows xp.

When you install the hardware drivers you need to configure a windows app aswell.... When i installed the drivers for the card it ran a simple wizzard where i could enter a wep encryption key etc....

I would remove the drivers and reinstall them, and hopefully this wizzard will run
