Default SOLAR PANNELS

I was just wondering wether it is possible to power a house with 5m squared of solar panels, rechargable batteries and a control panel.

It could be however there are many tricks that you will have to use to reduce your power consumption. Change all your lighting to low voltage and where possible use solid state. Use a solar water heater and possibly run a wetback or alternative furnace to give the water that added burst of heat. even better use gas for the waterheating.
look at other devices like refridgeratoirs, tv's and otehr appliances that can me run on lower voltages as these are usually optimised for use in low power enviroments. Keep in mind that your 42" widescreen TV is likley to comsume a but of power

However this also depends on the size of the pannels you are using and the output power. also your battery storage system needs to be prety good. Using 2V cells and coupling them up is the most reliable way but is very expensive. Dont try using car batteries as these are not really sutable.

I would however no rely on solar compleatly. Use a backup generator. The calculation is something like 4 hours of usable charging from a solar array ruring an average day however our usualy NZ winters give us days of darkness and the last thing you want is the battery array to go flat.

I feel it might be best to rather, "Power the Whole House" but to think more in the way of powering a certain units. eg, Fridge, hot water and the TV even. That way one would have alot more control over whats going on. Just my 2cents anyway...
