well, the upload speeds on all of Telecom's new plans are still poor (128/192k) and they still have pathetic (yes, pathetic) data caps.

And people like choice, provided the wireless guys dont start stepping on one anothers toes and start a wireless war then I dont see it being any big problem. In saying that I'd dearly love to see Wiredcountry push Woosh out...

This also means very little to community wireless networks, except perhaps the possibility of some (illegal) connection collocation...

If Telecom had decided to offer 2mbit to UBS providers there might be some probs for wireless providers, despite the rather poor u/l speed but given your only option is a 10gb plan from Telecom, I don't think it's that big a prob. However, it might simulate growth and better plans all around including from TC cable (not that I care).

The biggest losers are those like Orcon esp who had decided to concentrate on UBS only to have Telecom pull this out on them.

I think the upcoming depeering will be more of a problem for wireless providers

Anyway, these plans are a move to match what telstra has been doing for a bit now - 2mbit and 10mbit residential connections

Why would depeering be more of a problem for wireless providers? They might be force to remove free national but other then that I think depeering is going to affect every the same...

TelstraClears plans are worse IMHO. They have a 5gb plan which is about the same price (as the new JS). Then they have a 10gb plan which is more the double the price. Yes it's 10mbit but since you can use up your quota in about 2.5 hours that's kind of irrelevant. The best has always (since they were launched which was BEFORE TelstraClear launched their latest cable plans) been (and is still altho not by so much) WC provider plans.

BTW are you sure it's colocation is illegal. It might be against your TOS but it's arguable if that makes it illegal. They could sue you of course but I doubt there is anything in law to make it illegal. Just a aside, some things related to telecommunications are illegal though, for example connecting a device to someone's network without approval is illegal, for example, connecting a non-telepermited device to Telecom's network is generally illegal.

Let's just say I'm not a fan of depeering and leave it at that..
it's too much typing. woosh and wc wont be too worse for wear, but the smaller guys will be pinched... if you're not a big player (xtra, paradise, ihug etc) then depeering is not your friend

I do agree that the TC plans arent that flash, and I've never been a fan of TC in the first place. I'm happy with my flatrate nzwireless.co.nz connection
as for collocation - it could be viewed as theft, and theft last I checked was illegal. Proclaiming it as illegal was probably a little overboard, but it did get the point across

I think we all hate depeering. Is there anyone besides the shareholders and CEOs of Telecom and TC who like depeering? Doubt it... Depeering is being done for commercial reasons not for any other reason so most end users are not please about it. But personally, I still doubt it will be more of a problem for wireless providers. All providers, except the two biggies Telecom and TC are going to have big probs, no matter whether they use UBS, wireless, fibre or whatever

I do think a lot of people don't realise who seriously it's going to affect us and I've raised this issue before but didn't really get much response. But nevertheless, I think anyone who understand depeering is not happy

As for colocation, I think I must have misunderstood you. I had believed by colocation you meant sharing your connection which is obviously something Telecom doesn't like altho given that they do have rather stringent data caps, I don't really think they should complain. However, although I'm sure this is against their TOS, it obviously isn't anything like theft so I'm just wondering what you meant by colocation

well, technically UBS will eventually reach faster speeds but not for a wee while

Wee while? Telecom have promised 1mbit in May, assuming they stil achieve this now they've delayed real UBS for up to 6 months this is already 6 months from the launch of the Telecom 2mbit packages and 7 months from the launch of i-UBS. 2mbit time is unspecified but given 1 mbit is supposed to be coming out 2 months after 512k, we can assume it will be at least another 2 months.

This is not a wee while. It is ages away. And Telecom clearly are not really that interested in properly competing with WC on the wholesale market. Orcon etc are still the biggest losers!

P.S. Just to clarify, I'm not trying to flame you, just Telecom. They are being lame and I think we all know it...

Telecom basically doesnt have/refuses to assign someone competent enough to properly configure their Junipier gear.. it's also why the whole 64kb limiting has taken way longer to impliment than expected/promised...

After taking a tour through the Invercargill main telephone exchange, telecom is currently in the process of upgrading to a digitaly run network. The way they explained it was that they break the band width down into 10Mbit lines then they break that down into a further 5 segments (2Mbit lines).

Depending on what connection you have they chuck about 10 people on one of those 2Mbit segments. If you want a 2Mbit line they just have to got to the nearest exchange to you and connect you to the same line.
They could dedicate one of those 10Mb boxes at the exhange to your line if you wanted.
They are currently in the process of puting all the new equiptment in the Invercargill exchange (which if i remember correctly they said came as a hand me down from one of the chch exchanges)

What ever you do dont go for an unlimited connection they just dump as many ppl as they can, on one of those 2Mb boxes
