Default Telecom WiFI Hotspots

Hey all.

I just found out today about connecting to Telecom hotspots.

Untill the 28th of Feb, Telecom (yeah of all people) are giving Wireless internet away for free!! All one needs is an Xtra login to sign in through http as its not a protected network.

I happen to work on top of a Hotspot that got put in days ago. Lucky me, i just started this job and got just got my pda. I've signed in today and it seems more than 256kbs... The telecom guys recon its 2mbit. I have a Dell X30 PDA so not too easy to test... Just started tho

Telecom does monitor usage so be carfully with your Mac address's boys if your pulling a movie through or something. They are wanting to charge, $10bucks and hour!!! LOL, bit of a joke been limited by time again... A lady on the phone did say something about 1mb for $1 too. Compairing to Vodafone's 5k, thats quite good.

Well i was cruzing past to see if you guys had already been posting about this but couldnt find anything. With anything I agree with ripping Telecom off so please, go download all that stuff for overseas you've been putting off just to say a big thanks back to Telecom for there services.

Good point... Um unsure because im using a PDA.

I did some bandwidth tests today and one showed 256 and the other showed 512 so that would explain why they dont advertise a speed.

All and all... Theres nothing quite like free wireless internet. Great for me with my workplace and my 625mhz PDA becuase i just leave MSN on etc etc.

I happily use skype on the Telecom hotspot without issue - I am unsure of gaming and other p2p apps tho...

Telecom are at there games again.

They will no let someone assign a MAC address to a login/xtra account. Very very dumb because one needs to login through http through their unprotected network. no WEP etc. I think that is so brain dead... If someone choose's they want some xtra passwords they can check people's emails.. find out living address's... Clock the bill up. etc etc.

It also can not handle people changing hotspots. One has to logout first before changing them. Myself i jump in the bus in the morning and i get outa range. I had to ring Telecom for me to login to another hotspot today. They told me it resets the login after 15mins of inactivaty. I rang 1 hour since i was last by the 1st hotspot.

Also found out that Alcatel is setting it up for Telecom. Once again telecoms sub-contacting and because of that they get a great short, 'quicky' service for people. Just like if you need your phoneline fixed... They get Subie's around to your house and there is a HUGE lack on comnuication!!

At first look this service looks quite cool through my eyes.... but the more and more i use it the less i think of it. I / we do have to give them a little but of slack because it is a really new service in their hands.

I'm very keen to hear whats others think of the service. Nice to hear the IP Phones work through it!!

Oh, so that was you then huh? ;]

Telecom could use older conventions such as the username.xadsl@xtra.co.nz. In this case it could be username.xwifi@xtra.co.nz. This would at least allow the user to seperate his Wifi password and main Telecom password.

I challenge you to get 50 xtra username's and password's by the end of February and submit them to Telecom if they have not smarted up by that stage.
Expose them. 8) 8)

Which will probably get you arrested and thrown in jail as pointing out insecure networks/systems and proving it is apparently illegal (as someone on this board has already found out the hard way)

afaik it's an existing login and password, whereas username.wifi@xtra.co.nz would be a new account

Hey Slippers.... Nice thought about getting the logins. Its a sham one has to go to that level before telecom will do anything about it!! Just shows their true colours once again.

Slippers' works at Telecoms WiFi helpdesk and has made it sound like, to me, that it is hard to get the 'Upper Level' take in our advice in. Quite sad really because its the matter of choice if we what xtra logins. Not if we can get them or not.

Telecom once again makes the Grass look Bloodly good on the other side!!!

(Wonder when TelstraClear is goiing to start WiFi.. lol)

DISCLAIMER: Slippers does not work for Telecom or represent Telecom / xtra in any way.

Kezza/Noodles:

Where an adsl account exsists and normal account can exsist also.

So for example, username@xtra.co.nz & username.xadsl@xtra.co.nz exsist.

What I'm suggesting is that a new sub-class of login could be created in a similar way in order to converge accounts but still keeping a seperate password that would allow access to Wifi hotspots only.

It would be a compromise between using a secured network and using your Xtra account/password over wifi.

In fact, the service is free at the moment and a free Telecom service normally assumes a developmental stage.

I'd understand that convergance of xtra, jetstream & T3G (mobile jetstream) accounts is a priority and that you may see a change in the way authentication is done very soon.
Prepay connect cards will be available shortly so I hear.[/quote]

Eh? im not either. Im doing research for my masters now. Last time i did it was for my 4th year project. I want to see if user trends have changed after an article was written up about it in the local newspaper. My guess is no, but id like to be proved wrong.

Why where you at? I thought you were down by the airport? Sure i could always do with someone to converse with. Wardriving is exciting for about 5 mins. Then gets tedious after that. Hmm must get a cd player to hook into my japanese tapedeck (damn am radio!). Stuff driving around for two days listening to golden oldies. Im sure to be killed in a car crash cos ive fallen asleep at the wheel.
