Default Warflying 2013 Access Points in Los Angeles

Quote:
"We went warflying over Los Angeles and Orange counties yesterday. Flying in a small plane at 1400 feet we detected 2013 802.11b APs in 75 minutes, 71% had no WEP encryption. A map and some pretty pictures are up at my writeup."
Certainly interesting! :P

No need to bolt it on....A standard mag mount omni should do!

Feed the cable in through the back door.... no worries!

Hmmmmm, hang on, Planes are made of Aluminium :?

I'm gonna have to take my laptop and gps up over Auckland on my next flight. I might even be bothered enough to take it up this sunday.......
Pity Auckland city is so darn small.

Once I do have a netstumbler log of AP's and gps coordinates, does anyone have the gear to be able to put the pins on a map?

John,
I would think that GPS readings of AP's from the air are meaningless.

Due to the ability to pickup AP's from the air reasonably easily,
this will lead to a potentially large error in the difference between
the true AP location and the GPS co-ord of your aircraft.

This "error" could be anywhere from 0 to 1000m or more depending on
a lot of factors (Aerial type, power output, aircraft altitude).

Mapping AP locations (by aircraft) has more use in giving a general idea
as to where AP's are concentrated, than any accurate position information.

That said, You would certianly get bragging rights for having the largest
Netstumbler log created in one go, in NZ!

In answer to your original question both LiamNZ and myself have been
working on creating a high res mapping viewer of Auckland city using
the "Digle" viewer. See http://wigle.net/

The map I am working on for the greater Auckland area is in the region
of 40-50 Megs so far and growing.

I look forward to your results.

So you are willing to try to do something with said netstumbler log file?
(I have been unable to get mappoint or anything worthwhile working - Mind you, wherearewe.co.nz seems to have a little resolution)

Absolutely! No problem in overlaying your netstumbler file onto the
mapping I have done.

If you want a passenger to help out, I could be available after the 30th

Feel free to PM me if you need to.

If john used a 24DB dish instead of a omni would he not get a more accurate reading as it will focus on a smaller area? Mine has a 8x8 deg focus which if you where to fly along at say 1000ft (the lowest you can go over a built up area i believe) you would get a sweep of 140ft or 70ft each side of the plane or a coverage of approx 15000 sq feet
If you want John you are welcome top use my 24db dish which is not in use at the moment as long as it does not hit the ground
Bigted are u using the aerial maps that you can get of lanz for the Auckland area cause they are lovely big maps (around 45mb per sector) and have very good resolution, I can see my house no problems

let me know if ya want to use it john and i will get it to you

wherearewe.co.nz Has really nice output. I have a 8000x8000 pixel png of auckland showing all the streets thanks to some issues/features of there map generating script. :-) I just changed the output resolution in the url and got a nice big map.

Working on a way to get nice pins on it at the moment. Won't be hard though.

- Mike :-)

Awesome.
I had a play with it too. It uses decimalised coordinates.
Here is the link to the cgi script for a 1000x1000pixel image of all of NZ.

How about the Auckland CBD? (Links to a 1megapixel image)
