Default actiontec m1424 Poor Range

I have FIOS and just got a new desktop which we placed upstairs. I have used wireless on my laptop from upstairs in the past without problem, so thought this may work well too. I put in a 802.11g wireless card in the back of the desktop and noticed poor signal strength. So, I went out and bought an external antenna for the desktop that I place on the desk next to the monitor. Now, when I show networks to connect in Vista, my home network shows at all 5 bars as strong, and I get a ton of other networks showing up strong too. However, once I connect, I'm lucky to get 1 bar and have really bad connections with drops and very slow thru-put.

Needless to say, my wife isn't happy spending money on a new machine that (to her) doesn't work.

Any ideas what I can do to help increase the range, or why Vista would show 5 bars that turn into 1 on connection?
