Default Can't connect as N only G?

Hello all. I have been googling this problem for a while and can't seem to figure it out.

First my hardware. D-Link Xtreme N (DI-655) Router, and Laptop with XP running D-Link Xtreme N Notebook Adapter (DWA-652).

I just recently turned a WTG54 into a wireless bridge with DD-WRT for my Xbox 360 so I had to turn my DI-655 router into mix G,N mode.

Now the problem I have is that my laptop keeps connecting as a G device for some reason. Occasionally it will connect as N but more often than not it connects as G. Is there a setting that I am missing that is telling the laptop to connect G instead of N? I did turn off the windows auto scan that checks for the best connection type. I am running the D-link connection software.

Any way any thoughts on this would be much appreciated. Sorry if its some type of super dumb and easy thing I am missing.

Best regards
Brian

From experience, if you have a connection somewhere on the network that's not the same as the faster connection, its going to drag it down to G speeds. You have a 54 mbps bridge, then a 300 mbps laptop adapter. That 300 mbps will drop down to 54 mbps since you have that 54 mbps bridge connected. I had the same problem with a N router and a desktop without an N card. It dragged the other N cards down to 54 mbps.

So in order to keep that speed up to 300 mbps, you'll have to get some kind of 300mbps bridge for your console.

Hope this helps

Thanks thats about the same conclusion I had come to. When I power down the Wireless G bridge the laptop will connect at full N speed.

So my solution I came up with is to go get a WRT150N and put DD-WRT on it and that will allow me to run in "N" only mode on my main router.

It kills me that you can spend good money on a nice N router and N wireless card yet can't reap the benefits of it if you have even 1 G device using your network....... Hmmmm I smell a money making conspearacy here

If it wasn't for my need to Xfer files on my home network so often I wouldn't care so much but LOL thats the whole reason I upgraded to N

Thanks again for the help

Cheers

Glad to help

One last thing, wireless N isn't ratified yet. I'm sure after its ratified and all the specifications are written in stone, all those features will start working for real. But unfortunately, that probably won't be for another 2 or 3 years .

Default Mine is the same setup

And even though I have a 802.11G print server, my DIR-655 is connecting my DWA-652 and my wife's Belkin Expresscard N up at 300 Mbps and 270 Mbps, respectively and both are reported as N/G. The print server of course, is connected at 54 Mbps. My Wii is also connected at 54 Mbps

I'm also using the D-Link Wireless Connection Manager. Not sure why my N clients connect at N rates with this mixed setup since I also had an understanding that in mixed, the max speed is reduced to the slowest client in the network. Maybe this is some magic in N, or in the D-Link gear.

Seriously though, one thing to try is to do an automatic driver update (Properties/Driver/Update Driver) for your DWA-652. I did that and was surprised that it found and installed the Atheros 7.4.2.105 driver.

Complain, complain... I have a similar issue with 3 G notebooks, a G router and my trusty Powerbook with B! I could try a G adapter in the Powerbook, but the hassel of plugging it in every time I pick it up makes me "happy" with 11... Looking for a new MacBook Pro with N and a new N router... Then I can segment the wife and kids on the G and keep the N for moi!
