Hi all, having a few problems and hope you can help.
I have a Belkin router and usb stick to connect. For a while now I have been having problems maintaining my connection, particularly when playing poker or downloading. I believe it to be a problem with a neighbours network, so I have put my network onto channel 9 (theirs is 8) but this has not solved the problem. Basically the problem is that my connection will either
a) cut out completely so I have to turn my router on/off to get going again, or
b) flick off then reconnect on it's own, but do this every few minutes.
My brother who also uses the network doesn't seem to get as many problems as me, he has a better signal though as he is closer (mine is about 41%, the offending neighbours network is 44%).
It also seems like this other network is the first that my pc tries to connect to. In the past I had an option in windows to change the order of prefered networks but this no longer appears when I go to where it is supposed to be.
Has anyone got any ideas as this is driving me mad, thanks in advance for any help.
The first thing you may ant to try is changing channels as the general rule is that you should have at least 6 channel separations. The signal is spread spectrum technology and the channel just indicates what the centre frequency is. This would mean that you should use channels 1 or 2 for best performance.
Also you may want to check you are using the latest firmware and drivers for your Belkin devices as they often get sold with old versions.
Regarding connecting to your neighbour’s network, you will need to delete the stored profile if you can find it. If Windows is managing your wireless connections you should be able to open Network connections and right click on the wireless connection and look under the wireless tab. Some third party wireless manager programs seem to hide this option, you may need to re-enable the wireless zero configuration utility.
I tried to change to channel 2 but the problem is the same and the connection seems slower than ever. I tried to update firmware the other day also by clicking on check for update in my router management screen. It says that it has found a firmware update but when I download it I cannot install it. It is downloading a .bin file and in the manual it says it should be a different extension than that. I also see in my router that protected mode is on, it states that best performance is with this off, is that advisable though?
If protected mode refers to encryption (WEP/WPA) then leave it on; the performance hit is negligible.
With the firmware, .bin is a pretty common extension for a firmware file. Normally there is a page in the router administration where you can upload the file to the router, and it will automatically upgrade and reboot itself when done.
Have you tried updating the driver for your wireless adapter as Dale suggested? I have a feeling this might solve the problem.
I had major problems yesterday and couldn't connect at all through my pc, though my brothers still could. Basically I was on channel 2 but the wireless monitor was saying channel 1 in my profile setting and channel 2 in my profile list! I have changed back to trusty channel 11 fo now and I can connect again.
The firmware would not update for some reason, it just didn't like the file it had found as an update. Will give it another go later. As for drivers, where do I find them? I couldn't see any on the belkin site.
If you are using Windows XP try uninstalling the Belkin drivers entirely, and installing them again without the connection utility it appears to include. Windows XP has a good wireless management service built-in which should do the trick, and it doesn't worry about channels as client devices should be able to automatically find the correct channel in use.
If you can't find new drivers on the Belkin website try going to Windows Update and using the 'Custom' install option to update drivers. You will need to use Internet Explorer for this.
After much searching it looks like a problem with the belkin f5d7230uk4. Many people online reporting the same problem and Belkin have even admitted to having to replace loads of these. Why they are still selling them with a known problem is beyond me. I'll be getting a netgear one instead now.
