Default DIR-615 Wireless Router Range Q's

I just replaced my Netgear Rangemax G with a D-Link DIR-615 router. Had some difficulty in getting it going. Questions are:

1.) How can I extend the range? It is not as far reaching as the Netgear. One of my problems is that it is set to WEP encryption which holds it to G. So if I change to WPA and gain the "N" will it help with reaching out?

2.) Also I hear that this unit does not have WDS so does that eliminate using a repeater such as the Linksys WRE54G?

Thanks for any responses...just trying to learn more about this.
