Exclamation HALP! i wasted my money.. need advice

I bought a USB Wireless adapter (DWL-G122) Airplus G blah blah blah.

Basically, the person in the shop said that it would transmit my wireless connection. you see:

I have one router with 4 ports (not wireless).
My computer is connected to one of these ports
i wished to stick this usb adapter into my usb port on my computer and have it transmit my internet to my laptop in the other room. IS THIS POSSIBLE?

So far i can only find the option to connect to wireless networks with this adapter usb thing.. and im mighty disappointed.

HALP!?

Smile You Can do it ! But Should you ?

Hello Zackyjack, What you want to do is possible but isn't easy to setup and maybe problematic, If you are using Xp you can setup connection sharing on your main computer which would still have to be plugged into the Wired router, And then you can connect to your wireless connection on your computer using an Ad-Hoc Mode that your software will have on the laptop,
for this to work you will have to have wireless working on your laptop e,g, Internal Card PCMCIA/USB Adapter. you will then be able to connect to the Wired computer, I havn't tested this for a while but when you setup the Host(Computer being shared) XP has a system that can create a setup disk that you can run on your other computers that you want to use the share on.

Beware that Firewalls will most likely stop your other computers connecting to each other so switch these off whilst setting up the connection and then add these once it is working,

That said even though something is possible I would go for the something like the Dynomode R-ADSL-C4W-G1 54Mbps Wireless router this isn't the most expensive in the world but would have everything you need, You can still then use the USB adapter you got from the shop and then not have to use the cable from the router to the computer. OK here comes the grtatuitous bit we do happen to have them Allwireless.co.uk Wireless Networking and Home Automation for Home and Business Dynamode 54 Mbps Wireless router R-ADSL-C4W-G1.

I hope this helps a little in short you can do what you asked but i personally would go for option 2.

Hey ZackyJack

You mean i'm helping to defy parents, I feel so Dirty,

Good to hear they will have the Bit back,

If I wanted to do it, I would buy a Wireless Access point ( Not Router) Just the Access Point, And then the Cable going to your computer from the Router I would then put to the cable to a 5 Port 10/100 switch (Should be very cheap) from there I would then plug the Access Point via an Ethernet Cable into another port of the switch this will still give the pc internet but also beable to give Wireless, and nothing has changed in the other room This should be able to be completed for under your budget, No the Hiding Bit, The range would be taken down quite a bit but the Case might beable to hold the Access point inside with just the power and an ethernet cable through to the back, Metal will take the signal quality down though, Or you could just put it somewhere else with other lights and they might not notice this would then get you internet & Wireless.

Regards

A Linksys wireless G access point costs about $69 at BestBuy. A Linksys wireless G 4 port router costs $59... Prices vary a bit and on sale you can save $10-$20...

I can't imagine why you'd want to go it the other way, except to tinker.
