i have a 6 or 7 year old Dell dimension 3000 desktop. It runs Windows XP. For a very long time it was just connected to the modem. A few months back my wife started going to college again so we got her a laptop; an Acer peice of crap running Vista. I bought a Netgear WGR614V9 wireless firewall router. At this point all I wanted to was have the laptop wireless on the network and leave the desktop wired to the wireless router. It took me a few days to get that going because the computers wouldn t discover each other because of some issue with the domain name or something like that (because of Vista and XP on same network).
The router is set up with WEP. I recently found a Netgear wireless USB adapter in some recyclables and decided i wanted to give it a try on the desktop. When I plugged it in to the desktop it installed successfully and recognizes the network. I tried to connect and it would not. For the last several days for a couple hours a day I've been messing with settings and trying to configure the router/adapter/XP and I cant seem to get it right. At one point I found a workaround that only worked until i restarted teh connection then would not connect again. I also cannot make this workaround work again, probably because of other settings ive changed since then. even this morning i reset the router and everything and tried to connect with no ecryption, attempting to configure the adapter and all that. I m getting so irritated with this problem. Theres so many settings and configs to figure out and i need some serious IT help. Im a total noob and am starting to freak out. everytime i go back to the wireless adapter config i screw something up im pretty sure. Also, when i go into the network connections and right click on the wireless and click properties and click on the wireless networks tab the passkey is always set back to something that i didn t set. Can anyone help?
I have read articles and forums for days and days so please no 'reset your router' or 'try turning off your firewall' suggestions please. I have done all that on multiple occasions. Any help is appreciated.
